Re: analogue and digital

2003-05-30 by Giwalo

Hello Dave
I mosly agree with you
It's great to have a choice between all kinds of modules, digital and
analogue, and I am happy with the way AS is making them. The more
modules the better I think.
But that's exactly my point: taking away a springreverb on the same
moment the AS 290 apears is not the way to go. At that moment AS
decides for me what I should use and which is better..... They are
different modules and should both be available. (I love the acoustic
feedback on the springs and the option of touching them with your
hands and thwacking them around)
Let me explain my big enthousiasm for pure analogue sounds:
I am part of a large ensemble of 12 musicians that play electronics in
some way (powerbooks, analogue synths, amplified objets, proccesed
acoustic instruments etc). At some points it's a (large or small)
band, at some point it's an instalation, shifting back and forth. At
the extreme loud tutti moments in which all pitches are used and it
seems there is no more space, the powerbooks cannot pinch through, no
matter their volume. Only the analogue syths can! That's not just my
opinion, all musicians and audience agreed on this (talking to people
afterwards). We did this at a 24 hour concert so we had a great
oppertunity to compair the sounds and we had lots of time to focus on
all these colours and different aproaches.
Analogue or digital is not a matter of having your head firmly in this
century I think. It's providing a choice for all kinds of purposes:
acoustic, analogue elctronics, digital electronics and whatever the
future may hold (and I use all available options so am not a purist in
that sense). In the 22st century it'll still be great to play the
fiddle I'm sure.
But to stop producing the Springreverb is like throwing away the baby
with the bathwater I think.....

I really like this discussion, and I don't think it is a question of
right and wrong.
It would be nice to hear other opinions on it as
