In aswer to both, I used this connection method by using the example of chaining two BCR's together in the manual, by pretending my usb interface was the first BCR. I'm in mode S-3. It works!

If anyone has had any luck chaining two BCR's together for MCE purely with midi cables and a separate midi interface, please give me a shout!

Chaining while in emulation mode is something I haven't done and as I only have 1 BCF (and a BCR) I can't try it out.
Perhaps someone else in the group will be able to help you out although you seem to be trailblazing quite well 8)

In the manual (do you have the latest from the Behringer website?) there is a picture of how to connect up 2 units. Note h the mode selection. Give that a try and see how you go.

All the best
