SX3, BCR2000 (Rotary) and GR - Buttons work, Poties don't

2010-05-10 by compyfox

Hi,

first time poster on this ML. Nice to meet you.

But unfortunately I have a problem with my BCR2000 already. Let me sum things up for you (actually a direct rip from Cubase.net - posted that Q there already, but without any response).

The important stuff:
Cubase SX3.1.1 Built 944
Behringer Control Rotary (BCR2000) - OS 1.10, Factory Presets and custom presets (using Factory Preset 1 for Generic Remote)
Terratec EWS88MT (BCR2000 connected to MIDI IN and OUT A)
Windows XP Pro SP3

What I want to do:
I want to use the BCR as hands-on controller for plugins and VSTi in full duplex mode. I don't need to control pan, volume or anything else with it (except for send levels mayhaps). This is aimed to be handled with a BCF at a later state.

What I don't want to do:
Put the BCR in some sort of Mackie Control Emulation. I find it uncomfortable and unintuitive, also I need stuff like HuskerVU and MIDIyoke.

I did like stutter's concept, but that concept kind of died in the process, and there is no documentation from him regarding the VSTXML either (how to sort, create, etc).

So it has to be Generic Remote.

What I did so far:
The BCR2000 is connected via MIDI to my EWS88MT. In SX3 I set up a Generic Remote, used the learn function to learn all knobs (potis) and buttons from Factory Preset 1. All buttons and poties are at MIDI Channel 1, all are set up as CC and respond in Absolute Mode. The knobs/poties are all set up to Recieve and Transmit, not Relative. I want to have a full duplex response.

I then set up a new layer to control (for example) Cubase's internal EQ. The top row of buttons control the EQ's band on/off (trigger: switch, "Umschalt" in German - though that switch is not necessarily needed), the second row of poties from top should control gain, the third from top the frequency, and the last one the Q (all of these use no triggers at all). So far so good. I also set up different layers for third party plugins like Variety of Sound bootEQmkII, DensityMkII, some random compressors (Kjaerhus being among them) and Cubase internal dynamics one. They are of course selected accordingly if I want to use them with the particular plugin.

THE PROBLEM:
After spending days of setting up and properly testing, the only thing that is working are the buttons. I can switch the EQ bands on and off, I can turn plugins on and off, I could also even control Mute/Solo, Bypass, open the GUI from the VST plugin and the likes. But no matter what I did, no poti works. I can't use any rotary knob for setting any knobs in any plugins or VSTi if set up in the Generic Remote.

What does work however, is if a VSTi fully supports MIDI CC# and/or I did a "learn" on the device directly. Then the poties work and also respond accordingly. I got maps for Cubase's internal synths Monologue and A1 that way, but it's NOT working in Generic Remote.

I tried the top row of rotaries, even different encoder groups, deleted the XML again, created it from scratch, nothing. Tried to change the modes from "Absolute" to "Relative", nothing. Changed the modes from CC to NRPN, nothing. I'm was then using the original default preset again (meaning, poties and buttons are CC, CH1 and Absolute), still no response.

To iron out all bugs, I even tried connecting the BCR via USB (mode U1, U2, U3), also on another MIDI module (MIDIsport 4x4 on slot A). Of course the MIDI cables are connected correctly (using ton of old MIDI synths). Also tried different MIDI Modes (S1 to S4) as well, all with the same behavior. I also asked for a preset by a fellow BCR user, poties still don't respond.

I give up.

I have the impression that the SX3 Generic Remote is simply borked and doesn't respond. I really hope this is NOT the case. Though I'm seriously lost, and pissed that nothing is working as it should (even though users reported differently).

Anybody have a solution WITH the Generic Remote? I'm in desperate need for help. Better sooner than later.

Thanks in advance.
