Shortly after posting my question here about an alternative to Huskervu I stumbled over this:

It has a Mackie display emulation build in.
I've only done little testing but it seems to work quite well so far.

So might be that the journey is over :)

PS:
As this was an .exe file to download, it was automatically blocked on my computer at first (WinXP SP3). I had to rightclick and unblock it to work correctly, so it could write a .ini file to remember it's settings.
