I'm not sure what's going on here exactly, but in any case you should be aware that even after you have started up with the "Init" preset, a preset change (via "<" or ">") might select a memory preset that again redefines the function keys and possibly the "<" and ">" keys as well...

To get rid of this danger, you could write the clean "Init" preset to one or more memory presets:
1. Press STORE.
2. Select the memory preset (1-32) of your choice via "<" and ">"
3. Press STORE again.
