Hi Royce, thanks for replying.

no, it doesn't seem to be a heat issue - as I can leave the BCR on all
night and all it will take to re-instate the midi is a quick
of-and-on. Which implies that it isn't a cracked track, I doubt the
heat could dissipate in 7 seconds.

it does start up, which is good news. It still operates the same as
ever - a short time of USB function (while I twiddle a dial) and then
if I leave it alone for ten seconds it will lose connection.

I had already tried wiggling the existing cable and tapping the
sockets at both ends while turning a dial to see if I could trigger a
loose connection, - etc and it remained connected just fine , until I
stopped turning the dial and then connection failed.

I thought I would try another cable as you suggest, but at the same
time I decided to try a different USB port on my PC, the two front
usb sockets come from a separate header on the motherboard. This is
where it got interesting.

On the frontal sockets with the new cable - connection was not lost,
even after leaving it alone for an hour. It behaved fine.

I then tried the new cable on the old (rear sockets) and connection
was lost after a short time. So the problem appeared to be the rear PC
USB sockets.

I then tried the OLD cable on the front sockets.
Right now, after 30 minutes, with the old cable on the front USB port
the BCR is still working fine.

My current hypothesis is that the four rear PC USB sockets are
either not providing enough power, which would be odd as windows
device manager reports them as OK. 3 of the 4 rear ports are used by
keyboard, mouse and Wacom tablet (number 4 being the BCR)

So, it's either a power issue, or there is a strange programmatic
interrupt or interference with the other drivers on that port somehow.
Whether that is because of the mouse or the Wacom, I'm not sure.

My next steps : I
'm going to try a bit of brutal restarting of My PC now that the BCR
seems to be communicating OK via the front ports, as restarting the PC
has historically triggered some changes in behaviour - sometimes bad
sometimes good. If the BCR can stay communicating via those front
ports after a few restarts I will simply use it via the front ports.
I've been struggling with this for 3 months!

I'll let you know how it goes.
But so far I can rule out the cable and the socket on the BCR and I am
down to either USB drivers, USB power, or faulty sockets on my PC.

all the best,
Angstrom
