BCR2000 over a LAN

BCR2000 over a LAN

2008-05-05 by sumit.simlai

I have just started out with buying the BCR2k today. I also have a
PCR30 from Roland. My setup consists of 3 PCs over a network, with
three OSs - Win 98SE, Win XP Pro and Win Home.

I plan to use the PCR30 on the Win 98SE PC running Reason and n-Track
Studio. For the other two machines, one running Adobe Audition and the
other Sonar 5, I plan to use the BCR. Question is, is it possible to
use the BCR in some way that I can control any of these softwares on
both machines?

Would appreciate any help please.

Apparently you can use VMM to do that:
http://vmm.audionetwork.be/documentation/VMM_MIDI_Network_introduction/

However I've no experience with VMM myself.
Otherwise there are a couple of commercial products for Windows
available, on Mac OS X the functionality is built in.

I suspect you might be able to use MidiOx to achieve the same thing
through a bit of port tunneling, but I've no idea how to set it up.
Hold on, port tunneling on Windows? Maybe not.

good luck,

There are a few Ethernet MIDI drivers out there. These let you send midi from one machine to another via Ehternet. If that's your goal. They're free for personal use too, with a low cost license for professional use.

Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Open source - no midi tho...
Wormhole2 is for audio professionals and musicians, allowing routing
of audio between machines on a network. Now you can make use of all
the processing power in your studio. For example; set aside a machine
for complex instruments or effects, route audio out to it, then back
into your favorite DAW. Or route audio between your PCs and Macs to
get the best of both worlds. Or share audio between laptops on stage.
Or or or... there are lots of possibilities!
Features:

    * Audio Unit and VST plugin for Mac OS X and VST for Windows
    * Transmits audio over TCP/IP
    * Super Low Latency on a LAN
    * One 44 kHz Mono Channel requires 175 kBit/sec
    * Works with any Network Interface (Ethernet, Firewire, Airport)
    * Works with any Audio Units host such as Logic, Garageband,
Cubase, Live, Digital Performer, Soundtrack, Metro, ...
    * Can be used on a single machine to send audio between
applications or to send audio between multiple computers.
http://plasq.com/wormhole
Does not do midi however.

Re:BCR2000 over a LAN

This one looks midi
http://www.linuxsampler.org/ethernetmidi/
EthernetMIDI is a free, open source (GPL license) application that
allows forwarding MIDI data between 2 PC using arbitrary network
devices that provide fast IP forwarding. A 100Mbit LAN will work fine.

For now it runs only on Windows but it will soon run on OS X and Linux
too.
Please see the Documentation in the README.txt file contained in the
ZIP file.

EthernetMIDI comes does yet come with a windows installer so the
installation is done by unpacking the ZIP file in some location and
then if you want make a link to the EthernetMIDI.exe on your desktop.

Requirements:

The EthernetMIDI (for now) requires a virtual MIDI loopback device for
Windows.
I recommend either Maple or MIDIYoke.
Since the site hosting the Maple tools seems down for now,
www.marblesound.com, I've temporarily mirrored it locally.

maybe that will work.

Here is another -
Net2mid
VSTNETMID is a suite of experimental MIDI
network plugins and programs:

MID2VST: This is a VST plugin that takes MIDI input
from a system MIDI port and sends the events as
VST MIDI data to the host.
VST2MID: This VST plugin receives VST MIDI data
form the host and sends it as regular MIDI data to
a Windows MIDI out port.
VST2NET: This VST plugin sends all VST MIDI data
it receives from the host to another computer in
the network or the internet.
NET2VST: This VST plugin listens to a port on the
local computer for incoming MIDI data. When it
receives something, it is sent as VST MIDI data to the host.
MID2NET: This is a standalone application that
takes MIDI data from any Windows MIDI input port
and sends it over the network just like VST2NET.
NET2MID: This standalone program listens to
incoming MIDI network data on a certain port and
sends this data to a Windows MIDI out port of your choice.

I am confused.
Are you trying to get your midi data from the bcr's to a computer without the need of a second computer?
Is the computer close (distance) to the bank of bcr's?
Can you describe with more detail your setup so that I could help you problem solve?

My first reaction is why no just midi daisy chain them together and run a midi cable instead...
Or some sort of usb midi patchbay and route all midi on the usb line to the destination computer.

Please give more detail, why go lan?

Kip

R: [bc2000] Re:BCR2000 over a LAN

Hi Kip,
I've 10 bcf2000 connect to 2 midi merger, then I've 80/100mt cable to
connect their to my digital mixer. I don't want use any type pc/mac
during my work, bad experience in the past. I'd use the pc just for
setting the bcr's.My idea is: i use some adapter to convert
midi-to-lan lan-to-midi, but i've find just kissbox and nothing else.
Some one have other idea? I'm making some schematic about one
standalone midi adapter midi-to-rs485/422 rs485/422-to-midi and even
make the circuit myself but I've not so much time now.
Thats all

best regards
Alessandro

Alessandro,

A couple of things come to mind...
1 why not run a midi cable that length.
http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1353338&mpage=1&key=Cable%
2CLengths\ufffd
has some discussion on length... now 100m is a long run!
Seems like what you need is some kind of repeater in the middle...
or have you considered some kind of wireless setup. A guy on that
thread mentioned M-audio's wireless midi... not so sure about that one.
Again, my thought is a cable much like a long xlr cable mentioned in
the above thread... hmm... I wonder if there is an amp like box for
mics. There must be...
Do you understand what I suggest?

This looks promising.
http://www.jlcooper.com/pages/mla.html
particularly the MLA-XLR MIDI Line Amplifier. Up to 1000feet using xlr
cable.
However, not cheap - http://www.midi-store.com/JL-Cooper-MLA-XLR-Midi-
Line-Amp-p-16685.html
However, maybe cheaper then the kiss thing.

Here is the thing...
http://store.castlestudios.com/product.php?
productid=16157&cat=254&page=1
also not cheap.

For the homebrewer... this sounds interesting but time to build..
http://www.wb5mrn.com/midi/midixtnd.htm

wireless...
http://www.kentonuk.com/products/midistream.shtml

http://www.ghservices.com/products/midijet/

These look pretty expensive.

Well, that is the end of my tale!
Good luck,
Kip
