Waldorf Blofeld and BCR2000

Waldorf Blofeld and BCR2000

2008-05-31 by Dimitris

Hi there! Even though I am following the posts for quite some time here , this my first
post.

I am an owner of a Yamaha Motif ES6 and a Waldorf Blofeld.

In case you are wondering what Blofeld is , here are videos which I have uploaded with my
Blofeld.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZPdB5PuYlE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apXBCr2zMBY

I have managed to connect Motif with BCR and BCR with Blofeld. Everything works fine. I
can trigger Blofeld from Motif and control parameters from BCR. However I have a
question.

Each BCR knob is assigned to a specific MIDI Channel. Useful but my Blofeld is 16 part
multitimbral. Is there a way to assign MIDI channel to one knob? This way I will twist the
knob change the midi channel for all other knobs. So in short is it possible to control the
midi channel of all knobs from 1 knob ?

Please keep in mind that I do not want to use computer for making music, I prefer
hardware (even though I am lucky to own an elegant and efficient iMAC latest generation) ,
cause I use computers in my work so much that my eyes get tired from computer
screens. This is why my BCR is midi connected not USB connected.

Good question, I don't know if the bcr can control itself, which is
what your asking.
A work around might be to use 16 presets and use the preset button to
change the preset, have the output for each preset be a different midi
chan.
Seems kinda over the top for a solution tho...

I don't know off-hand the sysex you'd send to the BCR to change the
midi channel it transmits on, but you can set up a loopback via midiox
and thus the BCR can retransmit to itself. Some midi patchbays allow
for this as well. You have to be careful how you set it up to avoid
MIDI loops, but I've gotten it to work quite well. In my case, I store
"presets" for synth models I'm programming on a K2000RS. When I hit a
button to recall a preset, the sysex data is sent simultaneously to
the K2000RS and the BCR, causing the LEDs on the BCR indicating knob
position/button state to update as well. I'm pretty sure you could set
up something similar so that when you turn a knob, the transmit
channel also changes.

I would like to thank you both for your replies. It seems that what I
ask is not that easy.

I am also not aware of any sysex that can change simultaneously
the midi channel of all knobs and buttons. Maybe I have to look deeper
in the manual.

The reason for asking this is that I find it a wasting of presets (and
time) to create one preset for each of Blofeld's 16 timbres.

Also would like to add that I am half way to the preset for controling
WALDORF BLOFELD, I have added the 3 oscilators, AMP and Filter
envelop, NOISE generator and AM. What remains to be done are the 2
filters and some knobs for the effects- lfos.

I will upload the preset here when I finish it.

Do you mean changing the channel on the BC or the Waldorf? My
understanding is you want to do this on the BC. On the BC, if you know
the sysex message for changing the channel of one knob you can simply
use the same control to send the message repeatedly for all of the
other knobs.

Let's say you want to switch the MIDI channel for the 24 knobs on the
BCR2000 that are just below the buttons. What you'd do is set up one
of the knobs on the top row to send out 24 sysex messages (one for
each knob). You can (using variables) set this up so that the MIDI
channel in each of those messages will change as you turn the knob.
Now, set up your loopback via Midi Ox and when you turn the knob, the
MIDI channel assignment for the lower 24 knobs will change.

The same also goes for the Waldorf; if you know the sysex to change
the channel for one controller you simply send a bunch of those sysex
messages at once. There's no need for a sysex message that does
everything in one go -- sending multiple sysex messages is part of the
power of the BC controllers.
