BC Manager 1.3.0 available now

BC Manager 1.3.0 available now

2008-06-10 by Mark van den Berg

Hi everyone,

BC Manager 1.3.0 is now available from the file section (look under
"Applications").

It has a lot of new features. Among others:

The pdf file of the manual includes bookmarks for the document
sections, which makes navigation much easier.

Several new BCF2000/BCR2000 (auto)detection facilities are available.
For instance, when you start BC Manager for the very first time, it
automatically finds all switched-on BCs connected to the computer by
USB or standard MIDI I/O ports.

You can open, save and convert bc2 files.

You can import Propellerhead Reason's remote map files for the BCF2000
and BCR2000. (This is mainly useful for visualization and printing.)

The Set operation now works for several more element parameters, and
the step size per row (element) can be set to ANY value.

Many changes to the BCF2000 and BCR2000 windows. Most importantly: you
can now widen the window, which is extremely useful if the element
labels are long.

See the accompanying manual for details on all the new features.

There are also quite a few reasonably important bug fixes, so all in
all this version is a "must" for anyone using the program.

As always, you can install directly on top of any previous version.

Enjoy!

Mark.

Thanks for the new version, this is an essential tool for all BCR/BCF users

I have noticed that the installer is now nearly 5MB in size, but the installed files only total 1.6MB ...
Are any hidden files installed, to explain the 5MB size of the installer ??

It's in the files section > applications.

Unfortunately, the InstallShield installer itself takes up about 3 MB
of the package.
In fact, I've found that the amount of overhead from the installer
depends on the version of InstallShield: until a few years back I used
a version from 1998: there the overhead was maybe just 1 MB, but some
users of my GS-10 Manager (which used that installer) complained about
installation problems under Windows XP, which is why I upgraded to
this newer InstallShield version.
I haven't made an in-depth study of this issue, but I don't think I
can bring down the overhead without removing support for Windows 98 or
so. (Part of the overhead might just be a big silly bitmap displayed
during installation...)

I don't know all the details of how the installation works, but in any
case on my computer (under Windows XP+SP2) it turns out that the
installation creates C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded
Installations\{D4D56B6B-B675-4437-BA83-B4E9DDAA8F12}\BC Manager
1.3.0.msi. (I have no idea if this big number ("GUID") is the same for
everyone.) This msi file is about 1 MB big, so there's part of your
answer.
(I found this location via RegEdit.exe, under the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{3E963B59-4490-4600-AB86-A19797138A0C}.)

You might try InnoSetup, which is more compact and allows using 7-zip ...

Thanks for the tip! From the website it looks fairly promising.

However, even upgrading my setup projects from my previous to my current
version of InstallShield already took me several grueling days. And if
I'd want to change BC Manager to InnoSetup, I'd basically have to go
through the same process again: first I'd have to install and get
acquainted with InnoSetup, then I'd have to transfer all these small
setup details like the generation of registry keys and upgrade/product
codes (assuming InnoSetup allows all this in the first place!), and then
test the installation (plus uninstallation and upgrading procedures)
under various operating systems - all in all it will no doubt take me at
least a day or two, so I don't know if and when it will happen.

Mark.
