If the display says "bhuI" on startup, you first have to switch to
"normal operation" mode for most applications: with the BCF switched
OFF, keep the top left button (i.e. the one immediately below the
"TYPE" push encoder) pressed, then press the POWER button at the back.
The display should say "bC" briefly - then the BCF is back to normal
operation mode (and will remain so, even after switching it off and on
again).

By the way, I think there is a document available on the BCF's
emulation modes via www.behringer.com. "BC MIDI Implementation.pdf"
(available from the Yahoo group's Files section under "Documentation")
also gives some information (see section 20).

You can use USB-based MIDI or standard MIDI. (USB-based MIDI is
preferable.) Which of those two methods the BCF uses is determined by
the BCF's "Operation Mode": U-1/2/3/4 or S-1/2/3/4. You can check (and
change) this setting by pressing EDIT+STORE together, then using the
"TYPE" knob - and press EXIT when you're done.

If you're using standard MIDI, communication simply goes via the sound
card (or whatever) that acts as an intermediary between the BCF and
the computer.
If the BCF is in a USB mode (U-1/2/3/4) and the USB cable is
connected, switching on the BCF should make Windows XP recognize the
BCF immediately. However, Windows XP then installs a "standard" USB
driver, called "USB Audio Device". For better operation (in particular
the NAMES of the USB-based MIDI devices), it is advisable to replace
that driver with Behringer's USB driver for the BCF/BCR2000: the
latest version is 1.2.1.3, which you can download from www.behringer.com.

I can only speak for the PC: provided that the USB connection and
Windows XP's USB driver have been set up correctly (see above), there
is nothing more you have to do to make e.g. Reason work. In Reason,
just go to Edit -> Preferences -> "Keyboards and Control Surfaces",
and "Add" the BCF via "Manufacturer" = "Behringer" and "Model" =
"BCF2000", and select the correct MIDI In/Out ports.

As far as I can judge, that's because your BCF is in bhuI mode. In
standard mode it should work. See above.

Hope this helps,
Mark.
