Help programing bcf/bcr2000 with ableton Live, need some direction

2008-11-06 by johnnyt5646

i have just purchased a bcr2000 and bcf2000. i made the choice because of price and how it
can be used with many daws and dj programs. i need to know how to program my own
cusotm presets for ableton live 6. i want to use it for djing. i have tried the mackie
emulation and the presets that are found here. i like some of the features of the presets with
the mackie emulation but want to customize the units for my own workflow taking some of
the fader, button and knob settings and incorporate them with my workflow. my question
what is the easiest way to program the units. i have heard of python programing. bcmanager
bomes midi translator etc. all these options, what is the best, what is the easiest, what is the
most powerful. what route to go. i want such options as when you press one of the buttons
on the top row they will change the options of the encoders. kinda like the encoder group
buttons but for all the encoders. how to program a shift button. scrolling through the song
to set loops, scrolling through clips and scenes. i have a lot i want to learn, i just want to be
pointed in the correct direction and waste the least amount of time in doing so. i use a mac
running osx 10.5 i also can run windows via vmware fusion or i have a desktop running xp.
if i have left something out please let me know. sorry if you have received questions like this
before. i just have been researching this topic and have come up with so many options. im
just confused. thank you for everybodys help

John

For the BCF2000, the most fundamental choice you have to make is
between emulation mode (actually there are 4 emulation modes) and
standard ("B-Control") mode. Emulation mode is great if you use
software that expects e.g. a Mackie control. However, emulation mode
is not very flexible, and the "native" BCF presets are not available
in emulation mode. So if you want to customize the BCF (via native
presets), you must use standard mode. And of course for the BCR2000
there AREN'T even any emulation modes, so there you have no choice.

Since you're describing some pretty tricky things you want your BCF
and BCR to do, my guess is that you're best off with standard mode.

There are several editors available for standard mode. You may want to
look at http://shoshin.110mb.com/genmce, which describes and compares
the capabilities of several of these editors. However, unfortunately
from your point of view, most of them are only available for Windows,
so you'll indeed have to find a way around that.

Since you're new to the BCF/BCR, the easiest way to get started is
probably BC Manager (although I may be biased, since I wrote it...).
Basically, BC Manager allows you to do virtually everything that is
possible with the BCF/BCR (which is quite a lot, actually) - in a more
or less user-friendly way, i.e. BC Manager hides the underlying
communication protocol from the user.

Some of the above list of tricks you describe may actually be
impossible on the BCF/BCR as such - so no native BCF/BCR editor like
BC Manager will help you then. Some of these things MIGHT be possible
via an intermediate MIDI translator (e.g. MIDI-OX + MIDI Yoke on the
PC - I don't know what is available on a Mac). However, at your
current stage that would be a bit like trying to learn to drive in a
Formula I car, if you know what I mean; so I'd say: first learn the
basic capabilities of the BCF/BCR's standard mode.

Mark.

Your constant understatement is honorable, but rather unnecessary... ;-)
BC Manager is the most advanced BCR/BCF editor available and Behringer
would proof intelligence, if they would replace their crappy B-Control
Edit with it.
