Customized Mackie emulation ?

Customized Mackie emulation ?

2009-01-13 by dapelikan

Hi all,

first of all thanks for the great and detailed information available
here, it is really invaluable.

I'm using Cubase4 with a BCF, and naturally i started to use MCU
emulation. However, i was a bit frustrated to see many buttons are not
used in Cubase, and some are assigned to functions i do not need or
are too complicated to use (especially the shift+button ones which
require you to have giant's hands).
So i looked around to see wether it was possible to try and implement
a custom MCU emulation that would suit my needs better.

I found these pages http://www.arthunkins.com/Behringer2MCUPresets.txt
and http://www.arthunkins.com/Behringer2MCUPresets.zip which were very
helpful.
I modified the .syx files opening them with BCMan to change button
assignments. It worked partially, but I couldn't get the led rings to
display pan values and update correctly, neither did I manage to get
the button leds to reflect the software status. This works fine in
'native' MCU mode, so i thought maybe it would be possible to achieve
the same with BCMan.

Also sometimes the faders are not initialized. I changed the
connection from usb to MIDI and this seems to fix it ...

Any advice, please ?

Cheers,

Lorcan

LEDs - on mackie emulation for pans/vpots.
You won't get them. The vpots output relative midi data.
Turn to the left they output 65s or some value close but above that
depending on how fast you turn the knob.
Turn to the right the out put 1s or something up to about 10 depending
on how fast you turn.
The leds don't know what to do with that. You can try to enable them
but they won't reflect correct positions.

The buttons are possible.
Look at the bcr live preset 5.0a and you can copy buttons to the bcf.
You can copy knobs as well.

I understand about the pots being relative, but there must be a way
the BCF gets the led values when in MCU mode. Cubase outputs MIDI data
to the controller everytime you change a settings with the mouse (pan,
channel select, eq, whatever) to inform the controller the value has
changed.
My question should have been more precise ...
I guess Behringer have implemented a special 'receive' mode in MCU
mode, but I could not see how this can be achieved in BC mode with BC
Manager.
Thanks fo the tip with the bcr live preset !

Thanks for your tips !
But I guess Behringer have a programmed more stuff in MCU mode,
because Cubase does send updates to the controller everytime you
change a value directly on screen with the mouse in the software.
For example, the led rings are updated to reflect pan settings.
I just thought it might have been possible to do the same with
BCManager and BC mode but I haven't found a solution (yet ?)

Thanks

Please let me know if/when you do.
I will add them to the presets I have done.

By coincidence, I have been investigating the BCF's emulation mode
MIDI protocols in detail recently: however, as yet I haven't come
across what you're calling "more stuff", i.e. a specific protocol for
controlling the LEDs, but I'll look out for this.

Can you figure out which MIDI messages Cubase sends exactly in MCU mode?
I don't have Cubase myself, so I can't help you in this respect.
(There are several setups in which you can intercept these messages.
E.g. via MIDI Yoke + MIDI-OX, or even a simple MIDI splitter box or
patch bay.)

Once you know Cubase's messages, it will be immediately clear whether
it's possible to emulate this in standard B-Control mode.

Mark.

Mark,
yes i'll log the communications between Cubase4 and the BCF with the
Yoke. I didn't know it was possible to 'teach' the BCF how to
interpret incoming messages, I thought you could only program the output.
I'll let you know as soon as I find the time to do this.
