vu meter

2009-01-14 by guidoronconi

Hello

I have seen some videos were Bcr2000 has the top row of rotary encoders leds working as VU meters... How is that?
Anybody does it?
I own both bcr and bcf, so if it works in bcf is better as I want to use bcr as plugin and Vinst controler.
ALSO
I had some issues with midi using bcf on Nuendo (mackie emulation)
Someone here told me the main problem was Midi yoke and husker vu
Then, after stoping using them I noticed I had quite a mess in my midi setup
My rig is: BCF and BCR, and a FATAR MIDI keyboard.
I was plugging both bcf and bcr by USB and then the keyboard to bcf....
But it was to much for my pc...? (but it's a core 2 duo with 2g of 800 mhz ram... and it works easyly with "heavy" video projects, etc)
I rather think It was a problem with midi at device set up and the ports I should use, I use a Focusrite saffire pro that has Midi interface.
Resuming... I donn't know what should I activate (ports) and desactivate to use all those controls...
maybe I should desactivate windows or direct music midi... or not...I do not know....
Thanks for helping so much in such "dumb" things
Guido

IMHO it's more a gag than a practical feature...

I once had a similar setup and experienced some issues with different
kind of USB gear, especially with multiple MIDI interfaces. Now I just
use an 8-Port MIDI interface and plug in my controllers via MIDI,
except my Novation Nocturn, which hasn't MIDI.

Thamks for answering!

that's what I thought...
I should get an eight chanel midi interface then, but then I should only
use the ports of that interface shouldn't I?
Is there any you advise me to buy?
Thanks, In the meantime I shall use one dvice at a time
Thanks again
Anyone else has suggestions?
Guido

I do know that Propellerhead Reason does this: if you connect the BCR
to a Reason "Mixer" device and select Encoder Group 4, the 8 top
encoders' LEDs work in the way you're describing for the individual
mixer channels. Reason simply assigns particular CC controller numbers
to these encoders, then during song play it sends corresponding CC
messages to the BCR. A gimmick? I don't know - I found it kind of cute
when I first saw it, but how useful it is, is of course open to debate.

Mark.

Re: vu meter

you are right
I was kind of impressed but then I thought ...what would that be good
for ? (maybe just to keep control of what is sounding and what is
not...)... It may just look good...
Right now I'm way more concern with the fact I have to get a posible set
of midi conections as I described in the previous messages without a 4x4
or 8x8 midi interface... Any recomendations in the MIDI device set up in
Nuendo (is the same as cubase.) would be really appreciated.
Thanks!!

Yes, of course. But you do not need an 8-port interface, if you have
not so many devices. There are 4- or 5-port available, too.

> Is there any you advise me to buy?

I bought an used ESI M8U from eBay. But there are other good
interfaces from MOTU, Midiman/M-Audio. I recently got an older MOTO
5-Port interface for 5,- Euro, that works on the printer port, but
even with Win XP.

Or use a daisy chain...

Re: vu meter

2009-01-16 by guidoronconi

Hi
and thanks for answering!

I wanted to ask you how could I daisy chain the units as you said.
I thought a possible solution could be (for the uses I wanted to)

  • put the BCF on the MIDI port in my firewire interface and control Nuendo with Mackie emulation
  • Then hook BCR by USB and my midi keyboard controller through the midi on That BCR so I can do the Virtual instrument all in that way.

I would need 2 midi cables for BCF and one for the keyboard.
Would this work fine...
I don't know

Maybe I should

  • USB the BCF and then Midi the BCR with that mode described on the manual.... and then the keyboard at the MIDI port at my firewire interface...

That I can do but then I don't know how to configure the MIDI ports at "device setup" at nuendo. Don't know if I have to disable the windows or direct music ports or what...

I thing that sort of things is what is troubling me the most

Anyways thanks for the suggestions
Guido

Hello I've just try the 2 USB hook up with the keyboard on the BCR, and the BCR only controlling Reason... (I don't think this is what I'll use all the time), it works just fine.
the thing is I don't know what the layouts for reason are (other than knowing the knobs change in every device.)

I would like to know if you guys know for example: how to get from a device to another so I could change that without going to the mouse o qwerty keyboard...

Maybe also know other stuff about reason layouts..
Thanks very much and I'll keep trying

Guido

Ok I continue the thread although I think I should start another but...

I wanted to know if someone could tell me how to control vstinstruments
(For example Colossus vsti, or absynth) from my bcf in nuendo. or bcr..
any help will be good
specially the ones that could teach me how to make the learn thing as I
never did it... a steped instruction will be VERY thanked

You guys are great
Guido

Re: vu meter

Hi, a bit late to the party ....but i think it´s one of bcr´s interesting "features"...

I´m working on a Mixer Patch for Reaktor5 which shows besides other nice settings
8 VU Meters
and of course you can mix, too. :) definitly willing to post it here if i finish it the next time.

YO, the little problem is as more exactly you want to set the VU meters as more cpu usage the PC has. Or on highest resolution setings on software bcr hangs up in a Looping death which maybe a alive response came after some minutes.

But also in lowest respond it´s still a very nice feature too look at & runs absolutly stable.

It was one of the reason i bougth the BCR.

cheers, Phil

Hey dna_soundsystems,

would love to check your MixerPatch for Reaktor.

Cheers,

yea, how could i forget to upload the Ensemble.

Check this link to download the Reaktor Mixer Patch with VU Meter Response for Midi Controlers like the BCF/BCR.
