BCR Plastic Overlays

BCR Plastic Overlays

2006-08-04 by martinseventy1

Hello,

As a user of the bcr2000, I find it a hassle keeping track of all my
preset maps(paper), when I actually find the paper, remembering
which encoder/ button does what....sound familiar?

I am thinking about producing a plastic overlay (2 part). This will
be produced by a specialist manufacturing company.

The overlay will be die-cut and will have scribble strips (mark with
a wax/pencil to re-use, or permanent marker) for the users to write
in the functions they have configured. you could even highlight
different sections for osc1, osc2, filters, efx.

With the design and manufacturing proscesses I am looking at a price
of about 15 for a set of 5 (2-part) overlays.

Please let me know what you all think of this idear, would you be
prepared to buy any of these?

Ive read another thread on this but that was a few months ago, any
comments will be usefull at this stage of development.

Thanks

Sounds like something I would be interested in. What company are you
considering for the manufacturing?

RE: [bc2000] Re: BCR Plastic Overlays

2006-08-09 by desyre

My thoughts:

I just thought if someone could make up a die-cutter for the templates they
would be pretty easy to print on sticky backed laser printer (or better)
paper. I know I used the behringer templates to print on thick paper before
gluing to cereal box thickness card and then hand cutting out. And still
I've had to use blu-tack to keep them attached half decently to my bcr.
I only use my bcr in Mackie mode so there is never really any need for me to
change, but if I did, then removing the templates shouldn't prove too
difficult with any left over sticky/bits of card easily being taken off
with some lighter/art fluid and cotton wool.
The main thing is getting a nice edge, which took me a while with a scalpel
blade and still looks a bit amateurish, so if someone sould set up a die
cutter this would be excellent and I'd certainly buy - but like I said it
would be excellent to have them sticky backed (or optional depending on
others' thoughts).
Also it would be good to provide some with punch out die-cut/perforated that
you could run through your home printer for your own customised layouts.
And for the pre printed and completely blank ones it might be good to have a
laminated/stick back plastic coated overlay - for protection for the presets
and for a wipe on wipe off for some customisable options?
Either way it would be great to colour code the shift and Page+/Page-
options throughout the presets just to help with a visual aid - I'm always
forgetting which button to press to change another's functions.

Anyway just my thoughts - hope they help.

Cheers
Craig.

Re: [bc2000] Re: BCR Plastic Overlays

2006-08-10 by Erik Bowen

When I was a kid in the 80's, there were these toys that were basically a picture book with plastic pages, to which removable stickers could be stuck. These removable stickers would hold pretty firmly to the plastic pages, but they also peeled cleanly off, and could be restuck with equal strength later.
If anyone knows what type of material the plastic pages and the removable stickers were made out of, and knew a good way to print on the removable sticker material, this would be ideal for printing templates out on and using with the BCF/BCR.
Does anyone know of such a material or pair of materials?

Hello to everyone who has replyed to this thread.
Just though I'd give my thoughts on some of the issues raised.

I have decided to make the overlays non-adheasive for a few reasons

To allow the user to change the overlays quickly and easily.

If the overlays were sticky when not in use they would quickly get
covered in allsorts of stuff ie. fluff, hair, grit. They would soon
become unuseable.

The design of the overlays will fit well round the buttons and
should hopefully 'lock' the overlay in place, however some blu-tack
or thin double sided tape might be needed (I will know better once I
have a prototype)

The thing about 'setting up' a die-cutter. The dies have to be
specially made for each job and are custom.

All the overlays will be supplied blank, with scribble strips
printed onto them (double height 10mm). The user can write on them
as they please. They can be written on with a pencil/wax pencil to
provide a wipe off, and reuse, or a pemanent marker and highlighter
pen to provide colour and make the writing permanent.

I like the idear about using a home printer to print on them. This
is infact a brilliant Idear (thanks mate). I will look into making a
template of some sort maybe for word, as its the one I use and I
think alot of people will have it installed.

I dont know of that plastic from the 80's (sounds good though). I am
looking into getting thesr overlays made in .25mm plastic to allow
decent clearance for the buttons.

I hope this has answered a few questions, thanks again the feedback
has been invaluable, cheers

Martin
