Midi filter

2009-12-06 by Ali

Hi,

Does anyone know whether it's possible to use BCF2000 as a midi filter? For example is it possible to program the device so that whenever it receives a midi signal from midi in, it filters everything but program change signals and routes these signals to usb midi out?

Thanks,

Ali

I wonder y you are asking. With a Computer and a DAW this should be no problem. only want to make sure ;)

If you are using the USB I guess you must have a PC/Mac connected.
For a PC the free program MidiOx will do what you want.
You can extend that program with MidiYoke, also free, that will give you some virtual Midi Ins and Outs.

Any Mac people with a solution?

For a non computer setup the BC is not the answer. I have a vague notion that MidiSolutions makes a MIDI filter box.

Perhaps if you give us more details on what you are trying to do there might other ways of solving the problem.

Thanks for the replies. My problem actually has to do with cubase SX3 so I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask a question about Cubase but here is what I'm trying to do:

Earlier versions of Cubase had the ability to assign presets (instruments) to individual parts in a project. In this way I didn't need to open a new track for each instrument that I'm using in a project. Now somehow Steinberg decided to remove this very useful feature from cubase sx series. So the only way to change the instrument in a single track is the send the appropriate program change and back select signals and record them in a part.

But here is the problem: My sound module contains over 1000 instruments so I want to use the preset names in cubase rather than manually sending program change and back select signals. So I though that if I select a preset in cubase while the record is on, it will be recorded in the part. I was wrong: the signals are sent to my sound module but are not recorded in cubase. So I thought, what if I take these signals from the sound module and forward them back to cubase? When I tried it, it worked but bringing another problem: when I forward them to cubase, they are recorded, by then automatically forwarded to the sound module again and an infinite loop occurred. When I disable this forward feature of Cubase, every midi signal is filtered so I was not able to record anything.

So I somehow need signals to be forwarded only once before Cubase receives them, and certain signals to be forwarded only twice (program change and bank select). I couldn't find any program that can do that, nor could I find any suggestion concerning this problem of Cubase in any forum.

Sorry for this long e-mail but any suggestion is appreciated.

Ali

If I understood, for Mac there is MidiPipe, a freeware utility

Hi, haven't used Cubase much since abe 5 so excuse me for any errors but I do recall Cubase having a great midi filter section.

There is usually no reason to have program messages coming in unless you're recording them live. Can you just filter them out of all incoming data?

The trick is to find the simplest way to break that feedback loop. If you must send program change messages in (if you ARE using it live) do they really need to come out again? If not, filter them from all outgoing midi.

Or the opposite, if you are only playing back recorded tracks, filter Prog Ch from all incoming midi.

Should be able to do this within Cubase.

Good luck,
K

Sorry, I re-read your post and have a more specific answer for you. Go to file> preferences> midi filter and check "program change" in the "thru" column only.

Now cubase will record them and send them but not pass them thru.

Hope this helps
