Tweaking on a BCR/BCF?

Tweaking on a BCR/BCF?

2010-08-23 by Robin Lont

Hi everyone, let me introduce myself, my name is Robin Johan Lont and i am an oilpainter, tattoo artist and musician. I make electronic music.
I just bought the BCR and the BCF 2000 and i don´t understand the manual. I came this far thanks to clips on Youtube and the Cakewalk forum...
I have the settings from the Native instruments Pro 53 in my BCR 2000, i can use the Pro 53 and use the learn function to change the settings
and i got my BCF faders to move in Sonar through Mackie. Now my question is, how do i tweak? How Do i have to assign knobs and how?
All knobs and the learn function do not work in other vST´s and that´s my main goal.
Thank you for your time
Best Regards
Robin

Get the BC MIdi Implementation Manual, the document Secrets of BC by Joyce Craven, and the soft BC Manager and you are done

I think you need to be more specific about what you want to do to which VST.
Tweek??
If the VST won't respond to external Midi messages to adjust its parameters then you are out of luck.
Midi continuous controller (CC) messages are the common way to control VSTs - there is a preset from Behringer with all the BCR controls assigned to a different CCs.
You then assign the CC to the VST parameter with Learn on the VST , but it looks like you have already tried this

Post some more info and we'll see if we can help

Hi Royce,

Haha nice to hear you are the same old you again;-) I would like to tweek for
example Kore 2 from NI, 8 knobs. They
give great effect by using a mouse but here is where the BCF could comes in. I
have panning and volume in Sonar.
Wich preset from Berhinger to you mean?
I can load the Pro 53 from NI preset and that is the only one who works. I still
read on the net that people use for example
Massive from NI, they won´t tell how, so it should be possible.

Where do i get the BC Midi Implementation Manual, the document of BC by Royce
Craven and the BC manager?

Thanks a lot for your time and help

Best

Robin

Hi Robin,

if the plugins you want to control are providing a MIDI-learn function, you could use the same Pro53 preset and assign the plugin's parameters to the Behringer's knobs.
If they don't provide such a learn function you could wrap them with "MCX" from Midevice (might be a problem, because the developers website seems to be abandoned...).

Hi Sunrider,

Thanks for your reply. The plugins do have the ACT function, but if i use the
Pro53 setting nothing happens. My BCF works with pan and faders but that one
runs in Mackie mode.
There is unfortenatly not such a site anymore.

Bye

Robin

What is ACT? A Sonar internal device, like Cubendo's Generic Remote?

Hi again, I downloaded the trial version but it doesn´t say me much to be
honnest. I scanned in my VST´s in but i don´t know what else to do.
On the forum people talk about wrapping in. Do i do that in Sonar or outside?

It´s right here in the FILES area : http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bc2000/files/Documentation/

I didn´t quite understand the amazing job Joyce had done until i really tried to get to the guts of my BCR. If you want to understand the way to program it, you must read those files.

Regarding BC Manager software : at first i wasn´t quite comfortable using it, it may seem a litlle mangled at first touch, but when you get the whole idea and really pay attention to the manual, there´s nothing you can´t do with this little great soft.

In any case you need to know exactly what you are trying to control. Took some time on my ESX to figure out all those NRPN but once i did, i can control almost anything on the korg.

Down the bottom of the page are a bunch of presets

You don't say what DAW you are using. Abelton Live can give you more flexibility as far as Midi channels in the CC

Select the CC preset on the BC
Start Massive in the stand alone version.
Set up Massive with Midi input from you keyboard and the BC.
Right click on a Massive knob and you will see 'Midi Learn' - select that
Twist the encoder you want to use and the Massive knob should move and now this knob will be controlled by the BC. Massve turns off Midi learn for that knob once it has a valid CC.
Right click the next Massive knob and repeat.
Save the settings File/Options Midi tab

Load this file the next time you start Massive.

In Live you will need to have the BCR on in at least the 'Track'

Re: Tweaking on a BCR/BCF?

I have created a simple CC on channel 1 preset for the BCR.
It is in the Files/Preset section of the group.

If you are using Mark's editor it will load either file.
If not you can send the sysex to the BCR2000

Encoder 1 to 56 (4 banks in the top row) are CC 20 to 75 with a range of 0 to
127
Button 1 to 48 (4 banks of encoder switches and 2 button banks below) are CC 76
to 123

> Oh ofcourse i forgat, i am using Sonar 8 Producer.

Using Sonar ACT - take a deep breath, I hate ACT.

Enable the BCR Midi In and out
Options/Controllers/Surfaces
Add 'ACT Midi controller'
Select the In and out ports to the BCR
Check the ACT and WAI (Where am I) boxes for the BCR
Close
Tools should now have an option 'ACT MIDI Controller' select it
Drop down the Presets box and select Behringer BCR2000 (Custom)

Decide what rows of encoders you want to use - let's use the 3 banks of non
switched lower encoders to match the ACT layout
Click on the 'Enc 41' and you can change the Label if you want to.
Click on the area below the label and it will say 'midi learn'.
Twist the BCR Encoder (top left) and Sonar will store and respond to the data
coming in (it should read 0% to 100%)

It can sometimes take a second or two to make this register.

Once you have finished save the ACT preset
Keep this dialog open

Now to connect the ACT BCR to Massive
Insert a synth track of Massive

Click the Massive dialog to make sure it is the active window.
The ACT Controller dialog should change showing the attached Massive parameters.
Click on the ACT button in the Massive dialog (top right)
Move a Massive control then twist a BCR encoder to link the two.
Repeat this for all the other controls you want to link
Click on the ACT button again and it should bring up a messages box about x
Parameters and x Controls etc. Press Yes

They are now linked. When you exit Sonar the linking file is saved

All the best

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
