help please!

help please!

2012-10-16 by brizzo83

Hey,

I'm really struggling with the BCR2000 and ableton. I can't figure out for the life of me how to program the things I want in edit mode. For example, i'd like to assign 4 audio tracks and 4 midi tracks to the top 8 buttons so I can move through them without using my mouse (i've also tried this in the learn mode but with no luck). I'd like to also control things like the crossfader and certain instrument parameters that I intend to use. I've looked both here & the ableton forum & can't seem to get what i'm looking for.

I've looked at BC manager & the manual and to be honest, it was quite scary!! I'm not used to all the technical side of things & don't understand the majority of it! I've also looked at the video tutorials on this site & they haven't helped me much either. (you can tell i'm a total novice)

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

If you assign each track with a note then assign the note to each button it will select the track and jump to it. The one issue you will have is you have to save your setup as a start up session as there is no way to have this be setup from each time Live opens as default.

Hope this helps.

In Live go to Midi assign. On a Mac it is command M. Then select the top if each track and hit a midi not on you keyboard. Do this for each track with a different note. You should then be able to assign a note to each button on your BCR2000.

You can also use a default CC template on the BCR2000. Each button and encoder will have a CC number. Just hitting command m and selecting to top of each track the pushing each button on the BCR will assign a CC number to that track. Sane thing basically.

Re: [bc2000] Re: help please!

what you want to do is create a BCR-2000 with very basic assignments -- like a different CC assigned to each knob and notes assigned to each button (there's one in the factory presets I think) and then let Live handle the assignment of those things to stuff within Live. you shouldn't have to do anything very complicated on the BCR side.

once you have that BCR patch set up, open up the Live set you want to control. click the midi button. everything you can assign midi control to will turn blue. click on one of them and then turn the knob or press the button on the BCR you want to control it. repeat until you've got everything assigned. it's super easy once you get the hang of it. it's very easy for controlling mixer levels and effects sends, etc.

for instrument parameters, it gets kind of complicated. put a VST on one of your midi channels. in the Live window for the instrument (not the UI that the instrument creates, but the window at the bottom of the screen), there's a button for setting up midi control. you hit that and then you just click on knobs or sliders or whatever in the instrument window, and corresponding controls will appear in the Live window. then when you're doing midi assignment in Live, those things will turn blue and you can assign controls to them. it's hard to explain, but if you can find the right buttons, it's pretty easy.

other stuff to google for or check the manual once you get the basics working:
- within Live, you can play with how the assigned stuff changes the values (like min and max value)
- in the BCR you might want to change how the controllers work a little (e.g. the buttons can be toggles, momentary, etc)
- if you create a new Live set and set up a bunch of controller assignments, you can save it as the default that will come up whenever you start Live (I forget exactly how)

probably the easiest thing is to google for some video tutorials for setting up midi control in Live, or read some of the Live doc.
