USB mode not working. capacitor 1 blew.

USB mode not working. capacitor 1 blew.

2013-05-19 by xtr909x

yesterday i've got a bcr2000 from a friend. unit is fine, i have programmed several presets for controlling reason/rebirth in mac os9 using midi interfaces, so standalone modes are ok.
the problem is this:

when i try to use usb modes, the usb light in the front panel is off. if change presets the light goes on, but the device is not detected by the computer.

i've tried different cables, different ports, different computers, and operating systems.

today i opened the bcr and noted that capacitor 1 (C1) in the power supply board has a swelling top (it's not blown nor leaked).

could this cap be the responsible of the usb problem? I don't have a tester to make the proper measurements.

please excuse my primal english, i speak spanish.

BCR2000 v1.10 tested in Mac OS9 (9.2.2), OSX Leopard (10.5.8) and Windows 7 (32 bit)

thanks in advance

paquito.

Yes.

They can get weird and the caps can be the issue.
I found suitable metal replacements on a nVidea Video card and fix a very fussy one that way. You can also get them at Mouser.com

It had intermittent to down usd and mind of their own"auto mixing" encoders - that's always fun.......

It's all good now.

Hi paquito
The cap could be on it's way out, but I doubt it is causing your USB problem.

There seems to have been a batch of BC with bad USB.
I had a BCF that was returned and replaced.
My was brand new so I wasn't going to open it.

Check out some of the comments from a while ago.
I'm not sure anyone got to the bottom of it.

All the best
Royce

thanks guys. later I will try the cap fix anyway and tell if it works. If my bc belongs to this bad usb batch i will happy stay in standalone midi.

Re: USB mode not working. capacitor 1 blew.

2016-07-07 by paquitopaquitopaquito@...

hi all. today my bcr finally died.

when turned on, the device was cycling on and off forever.

the solution was replace both of the 16v 1000uf (c1 and c2 i think) caps and the unit now works properly, even the usb port. so now i have a fully functional bcr2000 :)

Common failure mode with those. I've fixed all three of mine same way at on time or another. Feels good huh.
