BCR2000 for VSTi control

BCR2000 for VSTi control

2013-12-22 by <rtx1224@...>

hello :)

I would love to dedicate my BCR2000 for VSTi control within cubase 5.
im not interested in controlling cubase itself, only VSTfx and VSTi plugins within the host.

here is my gear list:
novation remote 49SL compact
behringer BCR2000
akai mpd18
dell vostro laptop running cubase 5 and various VSTi's

(i also have a rme baby face, mackie monitors, and smpro monitor controller but none of that is relative to this topic)

at this moment, I have the akai and novation hooked up via their usb ports into my laptop, and the BCR is hooked into the novation via midi (bcr out into novation in)
this setup works but im not able to get vsti patch feedback into the bcr, and when i hook up another midi cable (bcr in, novation out) it causes massive issues with notes being triggered and looping repetatively.
i used to have the BCR hooked up via its usb port, but for whatever reason that setup did not work along with the novation (just to clearify I want all 3 controllers to operate one synth at a time)
so.
what is the best way that i can set this up so that i can get patch parameter information into the BCR?
id like the LEDs on the BCR to change accordingly when i change a patch in a VSTi
is it via the midi method and i need to enable a function or setting within one unit or another?
or with all 3 controllers connected via usb?

the really big issue that has been plaguing me forever is a seamless and integrated setup (or lackthereof) of controlling a VSTi with my controllers.

what im trying to achieve is: To Always Control Same Synth Parameters With The Same Knobs. (like a hardware synth)
in other words, i would LOVE to be able to switch from one VSTi to another, highlite it in cubase, and instantly all my knobs are controlling same parameters (regardless of vsti).
i realize that all synths are different and that i could never have the perfect setup, but i would like to dedicate all the knobs on my BCR to always control same common function that the majority of synths have (for example filters, envelopes, oscilator functions etc...)
currently i have to assign them each and every time and frankly its making me not want to do it at all and im tired of adjusting everything with the mouse. (to be honest this has turned me off of using VSTi's and computers in general for making music, but i would like to get back into it.

so am i limited to only using VSTi's that have the 'learn' function?
if that is the case, then that is too bad, but eitherway i would be willing to invest some money into buying a few proper synths and learn them well, as long as i can have them set up like a hardware synth and spending time tweaking knobs instead of assigning them.

if i can set this up and be able to use any VSTi (not just ones with midi learn) then that would be awesome as that would really open up a whole world of possibilites.

lastly,
i just tried plugging the BCR into my win7 laptop via usb and to my dismay im having issues with the bcr2000 driver... yep its been that long since i used it and i dont think i ever tried it in usb mode on my win7(64) laptop.
when i put bcr into usb mode (plugged in and on) win7 tells me the usb device is not recognized
i tried installing the 64bit 1.0.10 driver from behringer website and it keeps failing every time.

help would be really appreciated!

I also want to do this. In fact that is why I bought the bcr2000 in the first place but the whole thing is too confusing and I am not even sure it's possible to do this.

I have come to the conclusion that it might be better to add a large touchscreen monitor to my system and just have the vsti's on it. I know it's not ideal and won't feel quite the same but I don't see any other option.

If anyone out there can tell me, using idiot-proof instructions how to set it up the bcr2000 in this way I'll take you to my local pub and buy you an unhealthy amount of beer :)

I am struggling with it as well, so far I only managed to map Spectrasonic Omnisphere manually, i.e., with the VSTi open in Ableton, right-click on the control to select learn CC/note and manually wiggle the knob or press the button you want - but it is a tedious process - and if you forget to save the settings like I did, then you need to start all over again ;-( There's got to be a better way - still looking...

Is your BCR set to USB mode? Or just connected to a midi interface?
What is your DAW?

Hey guys you should manually map all your vsti's then SAVE YOUR PROJECT as a template, either the default set or save it as like "Template Set". Open that set everytime you want to start a new track and every midi bind should save. Combine this with blue handling (if you are on ableton) and u should be good to go.

Yes, that's as far as I got - I manually mapped the BCR controls, saved the blank project as a template in Ableton, so I can use it for the next project. I could not get my Mac to recognize the BCR via USB (even if the USB light is on), so I had to use the MIDI I/O instead but you should not have to do this - I think my BCR's USB port is defective.

I don't have a Mac, but I know the BCR needs a driver. Did you try installing it?

Hmm, I dont have a mac but I had a similar problem when I first got my bcr2000. I don't know if mac osx installs some sort of legacy usb driver or something like windows does, check to see which driver you are using. If the OS installed a default, try installing the usb driver from behringer, and if its the behringer driver try and just use a legacy or os usb driver. In my case the usb wouldnt work with THE CURRENT BEHRINGER driver. Once I switched to the generic usb driver all was well. Also try switching which usb port you are on ESPECIALLY if you are on a laptop. Sometimes the computer doesn't like certain ports. Best of luck.

Yes, I did install the USB driver for the Mac, which is strange in itself since USB is suppose to be plug-and-play, in my case, it did not work, no biggie though, MIDI I/O works just fine. I also have a BCF, had no such issue - just plugged in the USB and it worked straight away.
