Gravely ill BCR2000

Gravely ill BCR2000

2015-07-21 by Ron Anderson

One of my BCR2000 stopped powering up so I swapped the caps again on the power supply but the did not revive it this time. I checked the voltages on the power supply pins and the 3 pins that are ground are at 0V, the next 3 are at aprox. 5.0v and the red wire which is alleged to need to be 5.9 volts is aprox. 5.0 volts. So I thought, crap it's the cpu board.

For no good reason I took all the guts out of the frame and laid it out on the bench. I powered up this octopus of parts and too my amazement it powered up and posted! - huh.....
So I spun a pot expecting the numbers on the display to run but no they do not. Nor does the led move from it's spot on the encoder.
Well May there was a short (sure) and it's doesn't behave well because it needs it's chassis ground. (right). So I put everything back together in the frame and at least it powers up in the frame now but it is as dumb as when on the bench.
The preset buttons work in concert with the led display and the encoders follow the preset 'personality" as expected.

You can enter global setup and the parameters are all correct and fully tweakable.
Midi is down though.
The 5 pin dins don't seem to transmit or receive in S-1 - S4 and usb midi is seen by the pc but no midi flows either way.
So I can't redo the firmware as the midi is down. - I think.
Anyone seen such a failure mode?

Re: Gravely ill BCR2000

2015-07-24 by Ron Anderson

Well I found out this morning by swapping parts between bcr2000's that the failing part is the socketed chip on the cpu board that has the firmware sticker on it.
Is this the firmware rom?
Does anyone know where I might obtain another one?

Thanks Royce

Midi is down when the bad ROM is in. The only things that seem to work are global setup and the preset inc/dec.
So I have my doubts whether the loader will be able to talk to the unit but I can try, thanks. It's at my office, I'll try Monday.

I have reason to think it took a power hit from a thunderstorm.

Hi
Yes it is the firmware ROM.
Before you try and replace it, have you tried reloading the latest firmware?
and the firmware loader

All the best

Well midi is so down with the scrambled firmware chip in it that no firmware can be loaded.
So everyone, contact me if you have any broken, maimed, ran over, not powering up, or otherwise not working BCR2000s I can buy from you for parts.

As you have a working ROM as well as the faulty one, you should be able to get a copy made if you can locate someone with the right equipment, a local computer tech maybe?
Have you tried Behringer for a replacement ROM?
Good luck.

I am a computer tech - But live in the sticks now. There isn't a DataIO for miles and miles.Generally Behringer is like: "F$%^& - you" about anything. - they will be really weird about a firmware chip.
Thanks thigh

Not sure if you know this or have tried it, but if you take a wire (while unit is completely unplugged) and hold one end to ground and then simply drag it across ALL the rom chips (obviously you have to open the unit up and access the chips) legs, one at a time (and it can be rather quickly) it will "usually" discharge any bad or locked rom information that might keep the unit from proper power up enumeration...simply take one end of the wire to a ground screw and drag it across all the chip legs (try to keep it only on one leg at a time)...then put the unit back together and power it up...most of the newer chips have a register that when you reset a certain pin to ground they default to and in a burned in chip it is pretty simple to do this.
It is a fast way to see if you've "bricked it"

No Way! - It WORKED! I think I've been static zapping them as another one of my 3 went belly up this weekend.I thought it time to try your trick. And it fixed the first one and also the one that had the "bad" firmware chip. Althoughmidi OUT on that one is down and without a scope I'm calling optoisolator.
Thanks a trillion!

Fascinating. I never heard of this trick before. I'm filing this info away for later because it looks extremely useful! Does this also work on older EPROM IC's or is this just for newer breed ROM IC's?

The fix didn't stick. I brought the "fixed" unit home and powered it up and it's back it's old fault. When a USB cable that is plugged into the unit is plugged into a computer the green usb light on the bcr only briefly flashes then goes out for good.- except I just tried to show my wife how the fault was back and the light stayed on! so she is to sit here by be all the night long for bcr2000 lady luck!
Oh and this must be for new fangled roms. I've been out of digital logic for 20 years. We didn't do this "short to ground" trick in the 80s that for sure.
