Question for moderator

2008-01-24 by alancurrall

Is this group being moderated? I only joined a few days ago and just received my second
spam. Other midi related groups I've joined require a reason for wanting to join when you
initially sign up. I think this tends to filter out those only wishing to exploit the membership.
Just a thought, cheers,
Alan

Sorry Alan
Graham has added me as an extra moderator as he is away a bit, but it
turns out so am I and it looks like we were away at the same time.

My guess is that Graham initially wanted to make the group very open
and easy to join.
I might let him decided if he wants to change the registration rules

All the best

Thanks for the reassurance Royce. It's good to know there's someone out there.
Cheers,
Alan

Ditto Royce, on the moderation. I moderate a few Yahoo Groups and it's a lot nicer in the groups where the access is a bit restricted. I set mine to where only members can post and membership is by approval. Never a problem with spam then, or seldom anyway.

Hello!

I quietly delete and ban members who spam the group, but I can't
always do it as quickly as I'd like to.

The only reason why I've held off enabling Restricted Membership is
that I can't check the Pending Members list every day, and we haven't
been plagued by too much spam. Also, I wasn't too keen on adding
another barrier to membership, at least while the group was only small.

However, as this is the second time the subject has been raised, I
thought now might be the right time. I hate spam as much as anyone, so
I've enabled Restricted Membership. Hopefully, this will stop the few
idiots that get through, but if anyone thinks this is counter
productive, please let us know.

Also, if anyone would like to help Royce and I approve membership,
drop us a line and we'll add you to the list of moderators.

All the best,

Graham

I don't think it's a big deal if an aplicant has to wait a day or two for membership approval. And it's also a good idea to have a co-moderator to share the load, especially when you have to travel, etc.
