stiener pcb wiring

stiener pcb wiring

2005-08-11 by havensole99

hey all, sorry if this is basic newbie stuff, but i'm having some real
problems wiring my pcb for the steiner vcf. i inherited the pcb from a
friend who was leaving the country and it was already half built.
rummaging around my parts, i found all the needed ones and finished
the soldering. now, there is a hole on each side of the 100n cap in
between the 2 2n2222's that i'm not sure what goes in them, or if
anything goes in them. 1 above each of the 2n2 caps that are lined up
next to each other.

Those pads are to allow different sized capacitors to be installed. Nothing
else needs to connect to them.

cool cool. thanks for the info. second part i am dealing with is that when plugged in, i get no signal. correction, i get practically no signal. most likely i have the pins on the jacks configured wrong, or the guy i got it from configured them wrong. the jacks are panel mount with 3 pins coming off them. the right pin (if the tip connector is at top) which goes to the plate with the screw, is what i am using for the ground, the middle terminal, which is in the middle sandwich of the jack as well, i am using for the signal, and the left terminal, which is in the top of the sandwich, i have nothing connected to. i am sorry if i am making this explaination more confusing than it should be. any help is appreciated. thank you all.

I think from your description you are connecting the signal connection to
either the ring connector in TRS 1\4 jack or to the closed connection in an
NC jack which of course becomes open when you insert a jack and therefore
you lose the signal connection. Either way I'd suggest connecting the signal
to the other pin and see how you go.
Also double check nothing is missing, the steiner was one of my first DIY
jobs and i totally missed a resistor, it took Ken to teach me to hold it up
to the light to look for stars (unused pads where the light shines through)
to find it....youd be suprised how long you can look at a board and never
see a missing resistor etc without doing this ;(
let me know if your still stuck.

Re: stiener pcb wiring

2005-08-11 by Haven Sole

thanks. i realized earlier today that i was missing a resistor and placed it in wen i got home from school. the only other holes are the ones for the different sized caps, some of the extra power pads, 2 grd padsnext to the group of 4 caps. think i might have found the problem though, the pad for one of the res. wires came of at some point, so there is no connection there. going to try to fix it in a min.

ok, update..... still not working. checked all solder points, connections, ect, and still nothing. i am getting a very very faint signal coming through, but it doesn't apear that the cutoff or res knobs do anything and it seems kinda distorted. if anyone can help, please send me something. i can up some high res pix of the board if you think that might help.

Check your transistors are in the right way around. If you have used a
plastic variety, they may well be backwards. Also make sure you have the
right sort in the right spot, and that your diodes are all facing the right way.

Re: stiener pcb wiring

2005-08-12 by Haven Sole

checked all the transistors and everything is in the way the board shows them to be, with the tabs pointing the right way. i am using the specific transistors that the site says to use with the metal caps. the other thing i am thinking about is that i am powering it via 2 9v batteries that i've connected in both series and parallel. neither made a differance. originally i connected them in parallel with the pos. lead connecting to the +ve pad, the pos. of the second battery and the neg. of the first going to the 0v pad, and the neg. of the second going to the -ve pad. now i have both pos. leads going to the +ve and the neg, going to the -ve and a jumper going form the ground to -ve pads. sorry if this was all a stupid rookie mistake and have wasted all your time. if i can get this working, it is intended for a standalone rack unit. i am using the batteries more for testing purposes before i get a power supply. i've put up some pix on my website to see if anyone can tell me if i put something in wrong. sorry if some are a little blurry, but i am using a new camera and still getting use to it. anyway, the site is http://www.havensole.com/steinervcf/ please let me know if there are any problems with the pix. they are really high res so they can take a bit to d/l. if they are too small, just rightclick and d/l them so they can pop up extremely huge. thanks again to everyone.

here's a pic for wiring the batteries

intended for a standalone rack unit. i am using the batteries more
for testing purposes before i get a power supply. i've put up some

http://www.havensole.com/steinervcf/ please let me know if there are
any problems with the pix. they are really high res so they can take
a bit to d/l. if they are too small, just rightclick and d/l them so
they can pop up extremely huge. thanks again to everyone.

Re: stiener pcb wiring

2005-08-12 by Laurie Biddulph

Hi,

Your first approach with the batteries was correct. This circuit DOES need
both a +ve and a -ve supply and connecting the batteries as first described
would achieve that. However, this circuit also needs at least 12V on each
rail so that he various biasing points are correctly set. I would suggest
connecting to a +/-12V or +/-15V supply and see if it works then

site is http://www.havensole.com/steinervcf/ please let me know if there are
any problems with the pix. they are really high res so they can take a bit
to d/l. if they are too small, just rightclick and d/l them so they can pop
up extremely huge. thanks again to everyone.

Check your resistor values. From the photo, the 82 ohm apears to be 8k2.
That alone would make it unlikely to work.

transistors that the site says to use with the metal caps. the other thing i
am thinking about is that i am powering it via 2 9v batteries that i've
connected in both series and parallel. neither made a differance. originally
i connected them in parallel with the pos. lead connecting to the +ve pad,
the pos. of the second battery and the neg. of the first going to the 0v
pad, and the neg. of the second going to the -ve pad. now i have both pos.
leads going to the +ve and the neg, going to the -ve and a jumper going form
the ground to -ve pads. sorry if this was all a stupid rookie mistake and
have wasted all your time. if i can get this working, it is intended for a
standalone rack unit. i am using the batteries more for testing purposes
before i get a power supply. i've put up some pix on my website to see if

Re: stiener pcb wiring

thanks alot. went back over the values and found that whne my friend started the board, he switched the 82 and the 8.2k ohm resistors, as well and made errors in the 390 into a 3.9k and the 3.9k into a 390M ohm resistor. and used 10 ohm resistors where 10k's go. i'll replace these tomarrow and let you know if i'm still having issues.

Re: stiener pcb wiring

2005-08-14 by havensole

ok, resoldered all the wrong resistors and suprisingly, i'm getting even less of a signal output now. i think i'm just going to give up on this board and buy another fresh pcb. i think with all my soldering and resoldering of the board as well as my friends poor choice in components has probably screwed up the board in some way, shape, or form. so, if anyone has any other ideas, please send them on over, if not, thanks to everyone who has given me their 2 cents. this is by far the best group i have belonged to as far as help and support.

thanks alot. went back over the values and found that whne my friend started the board, he switched the 82 and the 8.2k ohm resistors, as well and made errors in the 390 into a 3.9k and the 3.9k into a 390M ohm resistor. and used 10 ohm resistors where 10k's go. i'll replace these tomarrow and let you know if i'm still having issues.

Check your resistor values. From the photo, the 82 ohm apears to be 8k2.
That alone would make it unlikely to work.

Ken

>checked all the transistors and everything is in the way the board shows
them to be, with the tabs pointing the right way. i am using the specific
transistors that the site says to use with the metal caps. the other thing i
am thinking about is that i am powering it via 2 9v batteries that i've
connected in both series and parallel. neither made a differance. originally
i connected them in parallel with the pos. lead connecting to the +ve pad,
the pos. of the second battery and the neg. of the first going to the 0v
pad, and the neg. of the second going to the -ve pad. now i have both pos.
leads going to the +ve and the neg, going to the -ve and a jumper going form
the ground to -ve pads. sorry if this was all a stupid rookie mistake and
have wasted all your time. if i can get this working, it is intended for a
standalone rack unit. i am using the batteries more for testing purposes
before i get a power supply. i've put up some pix on my website to see if
anyone can tell me if i put something in wrong. sorry if some are a little
blurry, but i am using a new camera and still getting use to it. anyway, the
site is http://www.havensole.com/steinervcf/ please let me know if there are
any problems with the pix. they are really high res so they can take a bit
to d/l. if they are too small, just rightclick and d/l them so they can pop
up extremely huge. thanks again to everyone.
