Wave Multiplier/Grinder Sound File

Wave Multiplier/Grinder Sound File

2003-03-01 by itsatwistah <scottnoanh@peoplepc.com>

I posted a sound file in the files section called coyote4.mp3. It's
an example of Ken's Wave Multiplier mangling a triangle wave from a
single VCO. The triangle wave is first applied to the grinder
section, then patched back into the triangle input. It's then
patched from the folds out, through an MS-20 low pass filter clone,
VCA, delay and VC Small Stone phase shifter clone. The folds and
offset are modulated by complementary voltages from the EG. The phase
shifter is modulated with the inverted EG signal as well.

Normally, I like to make more ethereal sounds with this wonderful
module, but using the grinder really surprised me with how it can
turn a humble triangle wave into a monstrous, grunge-like sound.

Cheers,
Scott

Cool :)

I've been mangling sawtooths with it of late.

Another little treat I made up was a little sawtooth pitch shifter. Feed it
two different frequencies, and get the sum of them out. 2hz + 200hz = 202hz.
All in a TL074!

I can't agree more, the Wave Multiplier is by far one of the
coolest modules out there.
I can't wait for Ken to do another run of these boards so I can
build up another .
I made a page dedicated to the Wave Multiplier, hopefully it
might help others with making theirs...

That sounds really interesting!

I'm just amazed at your output. For example, the idea of that matrix mixer
is something that never would have occured to me in a million years, but now
looks indispensable in a large system - one would think that it would have
been a standard module years ago on large modulars. Your line of modules is
definitely breaking the mold!

I still haven't gotten 'to the bottom' of the Wave Multiplier yet, if that's
even possible. One thing I haven't even tried yet is to use it for
processing CV!

Take care,
Scott

A matrix mixer is indispensable when doing complex feedback loops. For
example, take a sound through a series of filters, LPF, HPF, Phase
Shifter. Take each output to the matrix mixer. One mix goes back to the
input, one is the output mix. For added complexity, just take each
input and output to the matrix mixer. Watch out for feedback howls.

One additional trick, now take this feedback mix and put it to the Y
input of a ring modulator. Put your VCO or audio source to the X input.
This patch is documented in Barton McLean's manual to the Wavemaker 4,
and samples can be heard in Rick Petersen's mp3 files at my Wavemakers
web site: http://www.wavemakers-synth.com/wm_music.html .

This is a great site John. Clearly, a lot of work has gone into it. Cool
mixer tips, too!

Total agreement here!

I'm on dial-up, so I haven't perused all the docs yet. Was there a matrix
type mixer on these synths?

Re: Wave Multiplier/Grinder Sound File

2003-03-01 by John Loffink

Thanks for the compliment.

One additional comment, the ring modulator feedback patch validates the
usefulness of analog synthesis. Try patching it on any soft synth - it
WILL NOT WORK! The initial output of the filters is zero. This is
multiplied against the X ring modulator input, so the ring modulator
always outputs zero. It just takes a little bit of noise, offset and
non-linearity in analog to get this patch going.

Great page, Howard!

I remember a while back you posted some links to some music that you made
using the Synthacon filter - I really liked those examples - it made me want
to try that filter right away.

Re: Wave Multiplier/Grinder Sound File

Wavemakers did not have a matrix mixer per se, but the Wavemaker 4
Integrated synthesizer had multiple mixing modules that allowed a
similar function in combination with the Integrated Processing System
which contained a LPF, HPF, Ring Modulator, Phase Shifter and dynamic
shaper (compression/expansion/limiting).

Glad you like the site Scott. When I started out I had the hardest
