Serge like modules

Serge like modules

2009-03-01 by intellijel

Several of the CGS modules make reference to influence from Ken's old
Serge system.

cgs26 Analog Logic
cgs29 Wave Multiplier
cgs34 ASR
cgs48 VCO
cgs52 Simple Wave Folder
cgs59B/4xA programmer/seq

I am really interested in trying to clone Serge functionality and I
was wondering if people here recommend the aforementioned modules and
any others??

thanks!

I have the CGS Wave Multiplier and ASR and highly recommend them.

Semi-related... There's a topic on Muffwiggler about cloning Serge
modules, which actually links to the most well hidden part of Ken's
site. ;)

The old Serge circuits are interesting for historical reasons, but
hardly worth cloning in my opinion. They are quite simple. I had
access to some Serge's and assembled several for other people back in
the seventies. My favorite Serge modules were the "Smooth and Stepped
Generator" and the "Dual Slope Generator." The cool part about them was
how they could be patched in lots of different ways to get different
functions. I did not so much like the panel approach taken by Serge,
which consisted of paper with a plastic overlay on an aluminum box,
resulting in a permanent arrangement of a set of modules per box. They
did sport a unique and recognizable - but somewhat cryptic - graphic design.

Ken Stone has modernized takes on several Serge ideas, and you'll get
better modules starting with Ken's PC boards. The CGS29 Wave Multiplier
is a really great sounding modulator. The Analog Shift Register is very
cool. The VCO is similar to the ASM1 VCO, which was in turn based on an
Electronotes VCO. All very good circuits.

ok great this is good info to know. I will definitely start with the
CGS pcbs and then go from there.

Part of my Serge lust stems from the popularity of the now unavailable
Bananaogue VCS. I wish Ken would strike a deal to offer the PCBs!!!
(would be a lot of happy modular geeks if this were the case)

Any other Serge style designs that are worth checking out? Maybe some
stuff inspired by Serge but improved/modernized?

Does anyone have a schematic of this lm3900-based EG??

I've been looking at different EG circuits lately, and I would like
to see how this one works for educational purposes.
