Tempco

2012-12-12 by fuyuhiko

Hi there. This is a beginner question.

I'm planning to make the VCO but what does 1k 3300ppm Temco mean on the parts list?
It's for the temperature compensation, isn't it? But what kind of resister do I need to use, just 1% metal film?

Kind Regards

You need a 1k 3300ppm tempco. That IS what the part is. Yes, it's for
temperature compensation. This one
http://www.elby-designs.com/contents/en-us/p145.html will do the job. It is
what I use. Other synth DIY sites may also sell them.

If temperature compensation is not critical to you or you need to get the
unit running in the meantime, then fit a 1K 1% Metal Film resistor, will
work fine unless you take the unit with you in to the sauna, then in to the
cool room and then on to the beach and then up the mountains.......

Hi there thanks for the information not only by the posts but I've got some e-mails as well.

Though I will need to learn more about the TEMPCO, I assume the important thing is that the resistor needs to have physical contact with the transistor so as to dissipate{?) the heat of the transistor.

I've found some similar type of the resistor on the internet.
Might have questions when I construct it, but thank you very much for your all advices.

Cheers.

No. It's there so it is at the same temperature as the transistor via both
proximity and thermal conduction between the two parts. Any change in
temperature will be applied to both parts equally, irrespective of where
that heat came from (usually from the atmosphere). Early synthesizers had
both the transistors and the tempco, but NOT in physical contact. It was
found to not work particularly well.

Hello Fuyuhiko,

Tempco resistors are special; you can buy them in small quantities from
these places:

http://www.elby-designs.com/contents/en-us/p145.html (a
well-recommended friend of Ken Stone's, who makes the CGS)
http://www.bridechamber.com/Hard_2_Find_ICs.html (very reliable)
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/ (click on "Synth-DIY" and then
"Metal Film +3300 Tempco" under "Electronic Components" - a great guy to
deal with)
http://www.magsmoke.com/tempco-resistors.asp (sometimes they can be
quite slow to respond if they're busy)

If you're ordering larger quantities there are other options, but it
doesn't sound like you need that many.

There is general (but not unanimous) agreement that 3500ppm is near
enough to 3300ppm for synthesizer use so don't worry about that mismatch.

There are two excellent forums you should check out for more information
- electro-music.com and muffwigglers.com. Click through to the "DIY"
sections of each one for a wealth of information - thousands of hours of
reading!

Cheers,
A.
