1 uf BP electrolytic capacitors for CGS113

Hi Ken and all

I'm unfamiliar with 'BP' caps , does this mean bipolar ? Can i just use 1uF garden variety electrolytics.

Yes, BP is bipolar. Bipolar is also called non-polarized, so no, you cannot
use a garden variety electro.

Normally, electrolytic capacitors are polarized, meaning that they can
only be charged according to their polarity. If you charge them in
reverse, they'll conduct instead of acting like a capacitor, and will
eventually dry out, or if connected in circuits where they can conduct
large currents (for example as decoupling capacitors on the power
supply rails) explode.

I'm not very fond of the name bipolar capacitor, however, since
bipolar usually indicates that something IS polarized rather than that
it ISN'T. I much prefer the term non-polarized, or NP.

If you are hard pressed, you can emulate the function of an NP cap by
placing two polarized caps of approximately double the value in
series, "back to back", that is both the negative sides, or both the
positive sides, pointing "inward". Two 2.2 uF caps should be good
enough for this application.

Another possible solution in this case is to find a ceramic capacitor
(either a hole mount or even a surface mount one) that fits the
footprint. Capacitor manufacturing has come a long way since 1982.
just make sure the capacitors are rated 25 V tolerant or higher.

Hi Stephen.

You can get small MKT or WIMA type 1uF poly non-polarised capacitors
now quite cheaply. Things to check are the voltage rating (35V or
more), and the pin spacing. The ones Rapid sell in the UK are 5mm
pitch.

cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave , i might go with those , i'm pretty sure i have some.

Suppose i just needed to know the BP ones were not essential i this design.

Hi Stephen.

Bipolar (BP) and non-polar (NP) are different names for the same thing,
and *must* be used where the schematic says so. Regular electrolytics
with + and - markings on them will screw up or explode if used there.
You can use two back to back regular electros, as others said, but
there probably won't be room on the PCB...

I agree with Ove - "non-polar" is a better description than bipolar -
it's clearer what's going on.

The poly (polyester) ones I mentioned are square-ish box capacitors
that are normally a little bit bigger than regular polarised
cylindrical electros of the same value. As they are non-polar, they can
be subbed in, if they will physically fit.

Otherwise just go for regular electrolytic NP or BP. Slightly more
searching needed to get them from your usual supplier, but they're out
there....

Hope this makes sense!
;)

cheers,
Dave
