Do density in colors and black patches generally mean more gamut?  If I 
am measuring more density in blues, reds, browns, etc. can I say as a 
general rule that this particular ink setting is giving me more gamut 
than the other which had lower density numbers in those colors?  It's 
just so much easier to check the density figure than the LAB with three 
variables.

It may be easier, but its not telling you what you need to know to discuss gamut effectively. Learn the meaning of Lab values, so you can use the appropriate language for the issue at hand. Increased densities have some indirect relationship to increased gamut, but not one that is very useful.
