good results but need help tweaking

good results but need help tweaking

2006-03-08 by Ken Chow

I made a profile for Kirkland letter size glossy paper
(media setting:Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper)

Problem 1: shadows a bit dark
Problem 2: on the photodisc.com test image the grey ramp on the right
has a horizontal band of cyan about halfway down the page that
interrupts the transition; the band is about the thickness of the
apple in the photo

These problems are compared to using Epson's Premium Glossy Photo
Paper profile, which doesn't have the cyan band and has lighter shadows.

Printer & ink: Epson 4000, UC
225 patch test target used

My profile for Epson Luster Professional (250) also has darker shadows
and is a bit cyan compared to Epson's profile for this paper.

Questions/Help(!):
1. How do I tweak the profiles to lighten up the shadows? The
Brightness control seems a bit crude....?
2. Wazzup with the cyan band? I'll re-measure in the meantime and
report back if there's improvement...

Thanks!
Ken

I got a cyan band when I accidentaly read the wrong patch. Try going
back and seeing if any of the patches look out of sequence. Its a
little hard to spot some of the subtle ones but I've definately had
the same result from a missed reading.

Try brightness and contrast sliders...

But using a media setting that has better distinction in the darks at the Media Setting Check stage is probably a good idea too...

Use the saturation intent to print your image. Cyan band will disappear. Don't ask why; when I figure that out, I'll let you know. Changing intent is a stardard trick for sidestepping such issues, but of course, at our end, we want to avoid them instead...

In the beta 1.1 software (for anyone who has it), there's an additional
trick which makes checking the patches even easier.

When the Target window is open, and you're examining it, you can use
Ctrl-1, 2, 3 (Windows) or Apple-1, 2, 3 (Mac) to switch between Pure,
Split, and Measured display. This is MUCH easier than clicking in the popup
in the lower right corner of the target window. You can instantly toggle
the display between Pure and Measured to check the patch squares visually.

1.1b1? Ctrl-1 does not seem to do anything for me.

Sorry about that, in the 1.1b5 I'm working on, but which isn't available
yet.

No worries. Good idea though.

Thanks CD and Tom for your help.

I re-read the patches but got the same result with the cyan band, turns
out CD's advice to use Saturation intent gets rid of that!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
