Trouble with PrintFix Plus

Trouble with PrintFix Plus

2008-04-06 by johnigel

I have been using profiles I made with PrintFix Plus for a long time
and recently moved to a LCD monitor. I went to launch PF Plus to
adjust a profile and the program will not launch. I have not made any
recent changes to my computer which runs Windows XP. I tried
restarting, reinstalling and even downloaded Ver. 2.1, but it still
will not launch. A task bar button will appear, but it has no
function, left or right mouse clicks have no affect; I have to use the
task manager to close the button.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas? Thanks in advance
for your help.
-John

An LCD should make no difference. Be sure you have the latest version of PrintFIX PLUS (I believe that would be 2.1). Uninstall, and then reinstall, and see if that solves the issue (or uninstall your earlier version and install the latest from the website.)

Thanks David, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the SW
several times, but still do not have a window that opens when the SW
is initiated, only a button on the task bar appears.

La Cie Monitor Calibration Question

2008-04-10 by Ghi Stecyk

Hi,

I have just calibrated my monitor again today. Currently I'm still
using a La Cie Electron 22 B4 CRT. During the profiling process I am
asked to adjust the brightness until I'm able to see 4 different grey
swatches shown in a window. even after I've set the brightness at it's
highest the 4 swatches still appear as all solid black with no obvious
scales of grey.

Is this the correct thing to do? I can't see any other way to do it
other than setting the brightness to 100%. The monitor default is 30%,
which results in a lousy, distorted profile.

In the end my monitor looks good with grey appearing about as neutral
as possible (i'm on a Mac running Leopard and the interface looks
silvery grey with no warm/cool swings)

How old is the monitor? Could be at it's end of useful life. Usually about 3-4 years.

yup it's 4 years old. amazingly it's still going strong. the issue
with the brightness setting has always been there since i got it. it's
just that i'm not sure if the Spyder is able to calibrate effectively
do to it.

Sounds like you'll need to start a support ticket at colorvision.com. Put as much info about OS version, application version, and screenshots in your note, to assist in getting to the issue most directly.

This would imply that your ambient light is too high, or your display is too old... or both.

If you can't adjust the hardware settings on your CRT (specifically the brightness control) to see distinctions between the four near black boxes, then its not the Spyder's fault, the Spyder has not yet started doing anything, you are just being prompted to set blacks to a point that avoids clipping, and can't do so. Old CRTs often have to be set to 100% brightness, and used in VERY dim conditions to continue being usable as calibrated displays. But be forewarned that using a display that does not show distinction between the black boxes, even at 100% brightness, even in total darkness, will not show shadow detail accurately, making adjusting near blacks on screen pretty much impossible. Don't shoot the messenger; your calibration product is just pointing out the limitations of your display.

CD

ahh, i was wondering if my monitor brightness would prove an issue. yes the result is lack of shadow depth in the final profile. this is the way it has been since i got the display. i need a new one anyway.

Did your desktop resolution change a lot? If so, it could be the
window remembers its last position is being created off your screen.
Try right clicking on the task bar button and selecting "Move." Then,
without moving your mouse, hit one of your arrow keys. This will jump
the window to your cursor, then you can move the window with your mouse.

Try doing this:

Hold down the shift key when you see the startup splash
screen, until it disappears; you'll be
asked for your serial # again, does that clear
it up?
