Proof to print match and dark prints.

Proof to print match and dark prints.

2008-05-16 by gtakacs1

I have generated a profile with the latest Spyder3Print 3.5 beta after
replacing my printhead.

The printout from the printer using the built profile was significantly
darker than what the image looks like on my monitor. My monitor is
profiled and calibrated using Monaco Optix XR.

The colors on the print were pretty much dead on, however the
brightness was just too dark. So I went to adjust the profile by
changing the brightness to +15 which generated prints that match the
image on the monitor significantly better (the print matches the sRGB
monitor displayed image, not the proof preview).

The problem I have is:
1) Why are my profiles too dark compared to the monitor without adding
the +15 correction to brightness? My goal with using a color corrected
workflow and profiled printers is so I can take the whole guesswork out
of the profiling and I can print two sheets, read them in, make a
profile and I'm done! Now it seems like I'm printing two sheets,
printing a test print, adjusting/teaking the profile, printing another
test print, rinse and repeat and finally I get a good profile.

2) The proof looks a lot brighter than the print and after adding the
+15 brightness in the adjustment it is still the case. It is still the
case with profiles where I unchecked the "add to preview" button, the
brightness is still part of the proof profile and the proof still does
not match the print. Why is there no way to get a better proof to print
match with using some sort of preview feature?

3) Why is there no visual feedback to the adjustments of the advanced
tab without actually having to print a new print. Even if the proof
preview would be only ballpark it would still be better than setting
prightness to +10, print, setting brightness to +20, print, setting
brighness to +15, print and finally getting it right.
