Default Spyder 4 profile does not load when computer boots up

Default Spyder 4 profile does not load when computer boots up

2012-06-30 by rportnoy5106

Neither my old laptop (Vista) nor my new one (Windows 7) loads the monitor profile produced by Spyder 4 calibration even though that named profile is set as the default in Windows Color Management (verfied). This problem is seen when using my VGA connect LCD monitor. I am not sure about the laptop monitor. Both have been calibrated with the Spyder. In order to get the calibrated profile to load, I need to open Paint Shop Pro X4 which specifies that profile for the monitor. Upon shut down and reboot the information is lost again and the calibrated profile takes effect only after reopening Paint Shop Pro X4. Am I doing something wrong. Thanks.

There is a full-time utility that installs with Spyder4 which is responsible for loading the profile (under Windows) and reloading it regularly if it gets unloaded. This won't happen if that Utility is not installed and set to launch on startup. The utility should show in the tray. If its not there, reinstall Your Spyder4 software. If its there and the profile (or more likely it's Look Up Table), are not loading correctly, check for conflicting startup items. These are any app from your video card company, or from a different color management company.

This is really an issues best dealt with through Support, so if these suggestions don't solve the issue, go to Datacolor.com, and start a support ticket, providing them more info than you provided here (version of your OS, version of Spyder4, video card, video card driver version, etc).

Thanks, I will follow your advice regarding opening a tech support ticket. I just don't understand why the utility is even needed. If one chooses the calibration profile as default in Windows Color Management, shouldn't Windows take care of everything?

That will be your shortest route to a solution...

Windows does not automatically load calibration data at launch; in part because the tag in ICC profiles used to do that is copyrighted by Apple. So a utility of some kind is needed to make the necessary call at startup. Given the high rate of calibrations being invalidated by Windows Vista (Vista chose to flash the LUTs for various things, including getting your attention, and did not always flash it back correctly) we found it necessary to move from a simple start-up item to a full time Utility. The utility also does other useful things, but the key reason that you can't run without it under Windows is that your video corrections will not be loaded at start up.

Another issue to consider is that some Windows laptops can't handle two profiles and/or two sets of video corrections. Hooking a second display to the built in video card may cause failures under such conditions, and some type of utility to force the correct profile, and flash the correct LUT, is then needed. You appear to be using a graphics program to do this. Datacolor has a Windows utility (I believe it's called Profile Loader) for such situations.
