Spyder3Pro calibration problem

Spyder3Pro calibration problem

2012-06-23 by keesatindy

I've struggled for a decade to understand monitor calibration. I've never really understood it very well, but managed to get by with my old WinXP system with an Eizo Flexscan monitor. I was still getting by after buying a new PC over a year ago with Win7 and moving the Spyder3Pro over. I also bought an NEC LCD 2190UXi monitor and things worked well initially.

However, the first time I tried to do a full recalibration on the new PC, the software couldn't save the new profile. I worked with tech support for a few weeks and they could never figure out the problem. So, I've been uninstalling and reinstalling the software each time I want/need to calibrate again. It's a pain, but it has worked for the past year—until this evening.

This evening, I can't get a proper calibration. I did the uninstall, used the cleanup tool and reinstalled the software. I've always used the default settings (2.2 gamma, 6500k, LCD monitor, etc. However, when I get into the calibration process and try to complete the step where I match the brightness setting to the number that Spyder3Pro is giving me, I can't raise the monitor's brightness setting high enough to match the given number. This is true whether I select the "Accept Suggested Settings" option or the "Keep Current Settings" option. I've tried both, but hadn't experienced this problem before. The "Suggested Settings" are 90 and 5000k (not the 6500 default I set earlier in the process). I can't adjust my monitor quite high enough to reach the 90 figure. The "Current Settings" gives a 120 brightness figure and I can't come close to matching that.

When I cancel the calibration and go back to the initial settings page for gamma, etc., the 6500k I started with has been changed to 5000k and the LCD has been changed to CRT. Maybe this was happening in the past and I just never noticed?

I finally went ahead and completed a calibration by leaving the 5000k and CRT settings in place. That allowed me to match the brightness at 90 and I was able to save the new profile. However, when I checked the calibration of this new profile with the Spyder3Pro the white point check fails.

Can David or someone here help me understand what's happening. As far as I know, I'm doing the entire uninstall/reinstall process just like I've done it several times before and I think I'm doing the setup for the calibration just like I've done it before, but clearly something has changed.

Thanks...

Tom

I'm still looking for some thoughts on what's happening, particularly with the the changes the software is making during the calibration process. That is, changing my 6500k setting to 5000k and my LCD setting to CRT. This is showing up when I cancel a calibration after being unable to match the brightness in that step where I'm supposed to match the monitor's brightness to the number the software is presenting me with. When I cancel at that step and use the BACK button to start the process from the beginning again, that's when I see that the settings have been changed. Is this indicating a problem or is this to be expected? I'm guessing these changes have something to do with my inability to match the brightness during the calibration process, but it's only a guess and I don't know what to do about it. I need some help.

Thanks....

Tom

Have you set up a support ticket at Datacolor.com? That's the only sure solution...

Re: Spyder3Pro calibration problem

Not yet. I was waiting to see if someone here had any suggestions.

However, I just did some more digging and discovered that one of the deeply-buried CM settings in Win7 had changed since I last looked at it a few months ago. The setting I'm referring to is the System Default Device Profile. According to my conversations with tech support a few months ago, it should show sRGB IEC61966-2.1. Mine was showing an old monitor profile I had created. It hadn't been used in several months.

You get to this setting's dialog box via the CM > Advanced tab > Change System Defaults... button > Advanced tab. That is where the wrong device profile was selected. I had reset everything on this screen a few months ago when Tech Support sent me screen shots showing me what their settings were (and what mine should be as well). Since I'm the only user of this stand-alone computer, either I somehow unknowingly changed that item or Win7 is doing it as part of the overall problem I'm having with the calibration software.

In any case, I fixed that little problem and checked the most recent calibration. When I created the calibration and then checked it, it failed the test. This evening, after making the aforementioned change, the calibration check was fine.

I'll have to check periodically and see if the proper System Default Device Profile is "sticking" or not.

Have a great holiday everyone!

Tom
