Disklavier

The term 'analog MIDI' has been around for over ten years however, as Spencer points out, the term is perhaps not an accepted industry term. 


While I do not know who first coined the phrase 'analog MIDI', the term appears in the Yamaha Disklavier literature and the Yamaha DCD1 CD player (circa Jan 2001) had L/R RCA inputs labelled "Analog MIDI In". The DKC850 similarly has inputs labelled "Analog MIDI In".

there is no industry accepted term for the type of file on a PianoDisc CD so people make them up as they go along. the data on the CD is MIDI but is encoded in an audio format so some people call it analog. it is actually a WAV (some players can use MP3 files as well if they can decode it properly) file so there is nothing analog about it until it gets out of the decoder. I don't know about the internal workings of the PD system and whether the data ever really exists in analog form. Since the PD is made to be compatible with a variety of audio recording and playback devices such as MP3 players, my guess is that it might actually be converted to analog audio and then decoded into MIDI. 

anyway, it would be great if someone came up with a good name for this sort of file? Audio encoded MIDI maybe?

I've never heard of an "analog MIDI format". MIDI is an acronym for Musical Instrument DIGITAL Interface. Please explain.

There are programs that convert dkv files into MIDI files, I would think there is one for Pianodiscs as well.
