Good evening, everyone. The Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX from MakeMusic is stunning: http://www.garritan.com/products/cfx-concert-grand-virtual-piano/ <http://www.garritan.com/products/cfx-concert-grand-virtual-piano/> However, there are currently 2 big disappointments: (1) The software player that comes with this product knows nothing about incremental pedaling for the sustain pedal. When a piano is properly regulated, there is a bit of lost motion at the beginning of the pedal stroke. In other words, you push the sustain pedal down just a little bit and the dampers do not move at all. Then, there is a range of motion during which the dampers are in partial contact with the strings. Lastly, there is the final range of motion during which the dampers are fully off the strings. I have contacted the developers and hold out at least a bit of hope that they will update the product. Without such an update, many pieces will have unacceptable pedal blur. (2) The product has many, many parameters that you can customize to your heart’s content, including the velocity curve. Regrettably, the MakeMusic is unable to say what velocity curve would actual match that of an acoustic grand piano. There is definitely the potential for high quality, microphone-free recording with this product if these two problems can be surmounted. I just wondered if anyone had experience doing this and if there was software that stood out. I am leaning towards ivory ii American D Steinway and Garritan cfx Yamaha... Cheers, Carl > >
