Thanks everyone for the suggestions to find a good midi editor and recorder. 
From what I have discovered, the best programs I can find are Reaper / Anvil Studio and Sekaiju 4.5 (this is a free program put together by a guy in Japan available at http://openmidiproject.osdn.jp/index_en.html)  Its is basic but seems to be the closest to what I am after.
I would be curios to see what others think...
Between these three programs I seem to be able to do what I need.
Other programs seem OK but I am put off by the 100+ page user manuals...

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
