Playing Midi Files to My E3

Playing Midi Files to My E3

2016-02-28 by jantevy@...

I am a newbie with my E3. I figured out how to connect to garage band whereby I can play my piano and have the notes saved. I also downloaded a separate program called MidiMock (on my Mac) where I can use my mouse to click a key....and it then plays the Piano key.

What I am not able to figure out is how to play any Midi file or any garage band file that I just recorded so that it plays back on my Piano. What am I missing?

Good evening, everyone.

Although GarageBand will record MIDI data, it will not output MIDI data to an external device.

Thanks George. Can you suggest a software (runs on MAC) that will allow me to record and output back to the piano? If there is a local expert in the south Florida market that can advise me for a few hours I'd be happy to pay them. I've experimented for hours and can't seem to get it right.

Good morning, everyone.

Jonathan, I use Digital Performer from Mark of the Unicorn as my sequencer for the Mac. And it frequently use it to record and playback with my Disklavier.

DP is an industrial strength program and an appropriate price tag. Without knowing your needs, I can’t say that it is the right program for you.

I have sometimes helped Mac users trouble-shoot issues with Logic from Apple. I don’t own that program, and it seems rather difficult to me. Cubase, from Steinberg, might be another option for your, and Cubase LE is bundled with certain audio products from Yamaha, I believe. Reason from Propellerheads would be another option.

Metro, form Sagan Technology, is one of the lower priced but still full featured sequencers for the Mac.

To the best of knowledge, none of the above-mentioned programs have a playlist feature, and I don’t know if such a feature is even important to you.

An internet search for the terms:

mac midi sequencer

should bring up shareware programs of varied quality.

Keep in mind that I am only a user of DP.

PianoBench

Hi

What George says is quite on the spot. To record properly a sequencer is much better than the inner recording of the disklaviers (which are limited for editing but can be also very useful no fuss recording on the fly). Otherwise I personally use as sequencer Digital Performer and Cubase, for a start Cubase LE is a good idea its quite simple and straightforward as well as not expensive (and if you can find bundled with something else that is useful why not !)

And I use a "player" as jukebox to play all my midi files (many are stored on my disklavier but the best is to have the instrument connected to your computer/ laptop etc and send the files from there i feel). The one for me is Qmidi with its playlists and controls.

*For extra live controls I add to it the small application "Midi Patchbay" which permits configurations like sending all midi data to channel 1 etc..... An alternative more sophisticated is the MidiPipe software. Another one quite good but which is not anymore in the app store is "Midi-Connections".

Finally for using along the piano track some instrumental tracks I use now "DLS-MIDI-SYNTH" an application that sends midi tracks to the sound founts audio of your mac, you can find quite good sound fonts on the web and make your choice in the application between them to choose the one that fits your tastes. (This I use in conjonction with Qmidi which sends the midi data and from there the piano part for the disklavier is routed out to the midi out port that plugs into the disklavier.

But all those things take time to install , test an use... You must have a bit of ease with the tools hardware, software etc so in a way if you can find a tech or geek in your area that knows it all and that you can pay for a couple hours of consulting why not ? You could get very fine advices and most of all personalised ... not a bad idea at all

Good luck anyway , there is really much of fun to have with the disklavier for creation and for the magic of music listening, I am a professional musician and I discover new repertoire (classical) everyday... (one has to develop a good ear to find the good sequences on the very vast amount of files available on the net, the bestir solo piano are the ones played/recorded live by a real pianists.

Best of adventures !

Alain

From what I understand a "LE" version (light edition) of Cubase Elements 8 doesn't exist last version seems to be Cubase 7 LE... Those LE versions are the one bundled with a product (usually hardware) you buy so you get them free with an option to upgrade to the full version.

Actual bundled versions can be found here and there if you need to buy any of those products (otherwise Cubase Elements 8 is your choice)
UR Bundles

Lexicon Alpha

The Metro software may be also very good I dont know it and even less expensive. I personally would go with Cubase also for the company .

Thanks for all your amazing suggestions. I made progress but am still struggling.

1. QMidi worked like a dream. I purchased the USB UNO Midi Interface (USB to MidiIn/Out) which goes from my Mac to the back of the E3. I am then able to play all my midi files. SUCCESS!

2. I then went to Guitar center looking for the Cubase LE Bundle but they didn't have what I was looking for. I had the urge to experiment this weekend so I purchased an alternative called Studio One 3 (http://studioone.presonus.com) by PreSonus. It was bundled with the Audio Box Studio (http://www.presonus.com/products/AudioBox-Studio).

I am ABLE to play the Piano where the midi notes are captured within the STUDIO One 3 software BUT I still am not able to send the MIDI back to the piano where it will play the keys.

In using Qmidi which I think confirms that My cabling is sending Midiback to the E3. Fair assessment?

The "receive" and "send" Midi setting within the Studio One 3 software has the USB UNO selected for both but no luck.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

qmidi is a Mac program. Van Bascos Karaoke Player is a similar program
for the PC. Windows 8 and 10 have terrible support for MIDI. Any player
that plays only to the default MIDI player will not be able to play to
external devices without modifying a very arcane and difficult to find
registry key. I know this is the case for media player because you can
not select the output device only play to the default. Not sure what VB
does. I had win 10 for two days. The only thing I liked about it was
that it was relatively easy to un-install.

For anyone wanting to chagne the default MIDI device to allow playing
from Media Player or other programs that can not select alternate
devices, I have a little program that changes the arcane and difficult
to find registry key to any device installed on the computer. You can
find it on the download page of my web site.

Re: Playing Midi Files to My E3

2016-03-07 by rightnightboy@...

Hi, I have tried the demo version of studio one 3 and I cannot get it to record midi incoming data from any devices. I did proper set up and midi incoming data lights up the small midi icon in the transport section (bottom of window) and it shows up in the midi monitor window no problem... but the track doesn't record any of it. BUT i can have any midi files imported in Studio one 3 to play in my devices including the disklavier, so the opposite of what you have somehow !I have not much time so Ill stop there my exploration. Have you checked that you run the latest update ?

Another thing if you keep the pros onus hardware (which looks nice) well you dont need the midi uno, maybe if you use their interface all work well... also since your a "customer" contact them about the problem if you can't get around or dont find answers in forums.
I just tried back now my cubase to see if there was any problem with my setup and no, all works fine it plays records all midi etc...

Keep going you'll succeed ;- ) (even if its kind of frustrating getting there !)

Thanks all. I gave qmidi a try with my windows 10 but it was missing a dll file. I replaced the file but but still doesn't even load.
My hunt for a simple and easy to use midi recorder / editor continues...
Thanks for your help anyway.

Sorry sbout that you can try contacting them they are quick answering queries ...
Note that Qmidi is only a midi player not an editor nor a recorder for that you need to find a sequencer or a daw or some other soft that has those capabilities .

Re[5]: [disklavier] Re: Playing Midi Files to My E3

2016-03-07 by Spencer Chase

unfortunately everyone wants to do something different with MIDI so it
is not really possible to have a simple editor without disappointing
almost every user. a general purpose sequencer suits the needs of many
more people than one that is very limited. if you want to do specific
things to files in batches such as modifying the loudness scale,
changing pedal timing, moving notes among channels in bulk etc, others
and i have a variety of utilities that perform commonly wanted changes
without having to open the files in a sequencer.

if you tell us specifically what you want to do to the files maybe
someone can suggest a solution other than editing the files by hand.

my favorite sequencer for general use is an old copy of Cakewalk Home
Studio 10. it is not the best sequencer but it is fairly easy to
navigate, well documented everywhere because it is so old and it is a
lot less confusing than something like the latest Cubase. you should be
able to find it on e-bay for almost nothing. it runs on win 8.1 but i
have not tested it on windows 10 and probably never will because i will
probably never use windows 10.

hard to tell exactly what you midi recording problem is but here are a
couple of suggestions:
midiox/midi yoke might help to get your MIDI flowing the right way :) if
nothing else midiox can help monitor MIDI traffic and might show you
where the problem is.

if you are using windows 10 consider using a different machine with win
8.1 or less for recording. MIDI support has been getting worse and worse
with every new MS OS. i did not have win10 on my computer long enough to
know how it does but i have heard of others having serious problems
using it.

you can try running the program in a virtual box for xp or ??? it might
be a problem getting virtual box to see the midi interface for recording
but it should be possible.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions to find a good midi editor and recorder.
From what I have discovered, the best programs I can find are Reaper / Anvil Studio and Sekaiju 4.5 (this is a free program put together by a guy in Japan available at http://openmidiproject.osdn.jp/index_en.html) Its is basic but seems to be the closest to what I am after.
I would be curios to see what others think...
Between these three programs I seem to be able to do what I need.
Other programs seem OK but I am put off by the 100+ page user manuals...

I may add here Midi Yodi which is a good midi editor and player (it does not record though) available for many platforms:http://canato.se/midiyodi/index.html

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
