I can add some information about MIDI files and the Disklavier. A "normal" Yamaha disk will have the left hand piano notes in channel 1, the right hand notes in channel 2 (or is it vice versa), and pedalling information in channel 3. You have the ability from your control panel to cancel either left or right hand. I believe this is for those who are learning and want to play one hand while the Disklavier plays the other. If you have a midi file where the left and right hands are in separate channels then leave them this way but make sure to move them to 1 and 2. For example, I have midi files from PG Music that have the piano left hand and right hand in channels 8 and 9. I moved 8 to 1 and 9 to 2, rather than combine 8 and 9 into 1. This way I still have the ability to use the control panel cancel part feature. Now my disklavier has the ability to select channels 8 and 9 as piano parts but I have to do this manually (which is a pain in the b*). The newer disklaviers, from what I understand, can automatically identify channels that contain piano parts and will play them. But then the channel must contain a "program" command (i.e., "program Piano") to identify the channel as a Piano part). The midi files that I have from PG Music that are purely piano (i.e., no drums, etc.) don't include a "program" command. So as the midi files are set up, a MIDI player such as the one I use on my personal computer would play channels 8 and 9 using whatever program or voice (not necessarily piano) was last assigned for that channel. Thus I might end up hearing something like an OBOE playing channel 8 and a GUITAR playing channel 9 (and it'll sound awful). Ideally, the MIDI files that we want for the Disklavier would use channel 1 and 2 for the piano notes, channel 3 for pedalling information (which might or might not exist depending on how the MIDI file was recorded), channels 4, 5, etc for all other instruments with channel 10 always used for drum kits. And they would contain "program piano" commands so that we can audition the midi file on a PC without having to go and reset the voices for all channels. Yamaha describes a sort of standard setup for MIDI files and it would be nice if everyone followed this but they don't and that's why we usually have to work over the MIDI files that you find on the Internet. Some of the Disklavier submissions don't follow this standard either (likely due to the newer Disklaviers being a little bit smarter than older ones). The missing "program piano" commands is the most common problem (for PC's not the DIsklavier) since I like to listen to them on my PC before going through the work of transfering them to diskette. After this long-winded discussion, you might recognize that the following post is not quite correct. > When you open a midi file with an editor you will know what to do. It is > real simple, however, just look for the channel and change anything that is > 3 and above to 1 or 2. You would only move a channel containing a piano part (or program) to 1 or 2. And if channels 1 and 2 are already occupied with, for example, a Jazz guitar and a Bass guitar, then you'll have to move them to another channel (an unused channel). It can get quite complex if all channels are in use. I use Nagler's MIDI utilities to convert MIDI to simple text and then use a text editor to switch the channels around (you can tell that I'm a software programmer). But any decent MIDI sequencer/editor program should allow you to do this with some making it easier to do than others. Ah, the joys of working with MIDI. Have fun.
