[disklavier] Re: More Price Comparisons

1999-12-22 by Jack Schueler

Eric's reference to the DSR-1 and it's price reminded me of a question I once
posed a few years ago when I first heard of the DSR-1.

It's an add-on, right.

So here I am with my PC equipped with a Yamaha SW60XG midi card
and a sound card with MIDI-out/in. I can play any XG file, my Disklavier
can play the piano parts, I've got decent Yamaha speakers with subwoofer,
I can download MIDI files from the Internet. So why would I shell out $1200
for a DSR-1? Isn't it just a piece of computing machinery with capabilities
somewhat less than my PC setup. It sounds to me like an overpriced
(granted the market is tiny) PC.

Todd - I chimed in on the piano price survey, and now I have a
suggestion for another survey, if you're up to it: Database for prices
we paid for our tone generators (MU-50, et. al.) & misc. upgrades
(DSR-1, RAM, Flash Rom, etc.).

I obtained my MU-50 from Caruso music in New London, factory refurb,
for only $317. I think it lists for something like $550. I couldn't
find any discounts on the DSR-1 (lists at $1200), but might consider a
purchase if I knew of a "deal" somewhere. I think others would benefit
from this just as with the piano price database. What do you think?
