Units old enough to not play midis, almost always read 720K DD disks only and don't recognize 1.44MB formats. I found plenty of old obsolete software distribution disks in my archives for my purposes, but if you don't have any and can't find any at the local store (pretty rare), try this workaround. Tape over the extra hole (w/o the sliding tab) and do a full reformat of the floppy as a 720K DD. I have to do this on my antique #3 Win98 machine, because the other two are XP, which I was surprised to discover has dropped support for formatting 720K floppies. New formatted 720K diskettes are still widely available on the web at low bulk prices. You also must use formatted 720 K diskettes in conjunction with the dkvcopy utility which operates in 720 to 720 mode only. You should be able to purchase a controller upgrade for your unit that will give you 1.44MB compatibility, plus the ability to play and record Midi type 0 and Midi type 1 directly. It's not a necessity, or cheap, but it is very convenient if you download a lot of music. Hello all I have an older upright lavier mx80 series. I have discovered all the the midi files that are available and would love to play them on my piano. I have been able to convert the midi files over to .fil files and have made the pianodir on the disk but my player still tells me I have an unformatted disk. I am using 2hd disks, is this the problem? Do I need the double density disks? I have been able to do what I have so far due to this site. Thanks a million Jeff Yahoo!
