midi conversions?

2002-03-03 by jjoos99

Hello all
I have an older upright lavier mx80 series. I have discovered all
the the midi files that are available and would love to play them on
my piano. I have been able to convert the midi files over to .fil
files and have made the pianodir on the disk but my player still
tells me I have an unformatted disk. I am using 2hd disks, is this
the problem? Do I need the double density disks? I have been able
to do what I have so far due to this site. Thanks a million
Jeff

Your particular Disklavier requires double-density (DD) disks.

I would like to offer the suggest that you will have a far more enjoyable
experience with your instrument if you add a Yamaha DSR1 to it. The DSR1
looks and functions almost exactly like the control unit on a Mark IIXG
Disklavier. It connects to your old control unit via MIDI. It will give you
most of the modern Disklavier features, such as support for SMF Type 0 and 1,
conversions between both types of SMFs and E-SEQ, a built-in tone generator,
support for HD disks, et cetera.

Units old enough to not play midis, almost always read 720K DD disks
only and don't recognize 1.44MB formats. I found plenty of old obsolete
software distribution disks in my archives for my purposes, but if you
don't have any and can't find any at the local store (pretty rare), try
this workaround. Tape over the extra hole (w/o the sliding tab) and do
a full reformat of the floppy as a 720K DD. I have to do this on my
antique #3 Win98 machine, because the other two are XP, which I was
surprised to discover has dropped support for formatting 720K floppies.
New formatted 720K diskettes are still widely available on the web at
low bulk prices. You also must use formatted 720 K diskettes in
conjunction with the dkvcopy utility which operates in 720 to 720 mode
only. You should be able to purchase a controller upgrade for your unit
that will give you 1.44MB compatibility, plus the ability to play and
record Midi type 0 and Midi type 1 directly. It's not a necessity, or
cheap, but it is very convenient if you download a lot of music.

Todd
Thanks so much. I had a demo disk that the store
gave us and I downloaded some of the charlie brown
songs off you site to that disk and did all the
conversions and they played great. I will have to try
the tape trick over the disk hole. I have alot of the
hd disks but could only find 3 dd out of my pile of
disks. Thanks again. This is opening up a new world
of piano music for us.

The suggested list price of a DSR1 is $1295.

Check with a local dealer to see if they will substantially discount
this price. For a $1295 savings, I'd be willing to do a lot of
converting. In fact, I still convert my favorite midi collections to
e-seq format, because the eexplorer utility allows you to very easily
edit the disk title, song titles, song order, etc. The straight midi
format is somewhat less flexible. I don't do any manipulations of the
files with the Yamaha controller because it is much more cumbersome and
cryptic.

Jeff,

Should you not be especially interested in the synthesized instrument sounds of
the DSR1 (which you would want if you were to play Yamaha's PianoSoft Plus
disks), but primarily interested in storing, adjusting, and playing MIDI files
on your piano, I'd suggest you consider getting a modest laptop computer, a MIDI
interface (such as a Midiman Midisport 1x1), and a sequencing program such as PG
Music's Power Tracks. You'd have quite a bit more versatility for much less
expense.

Good luck!

Hi Jeff

May I just say. Don't forget to save your .fil files to your hard
disk or even to CDrom as a BACKUP. As floppies have a habit of
loseing their data at the best of times even more so when they have
been cross formated ie 1.44 as 720
