Good evening, everyone. In a message dated 6/16/02 2:55:36 PM, Steven writes: << Can any of the competition files be downloaded in the Disklavier Pro format? >> The Disklavier Pro can record in either XP mode or Enhanced mode. Both modes provide superior recording to what is available on other models of Disklavier. We did not record the competition in XP mode for a variety of reasons. First, during the Preliminary round, it was necessary to record hour-long programs as a single file. Given the density of this very difficult music, it would be easy to exceed the capacity of a floppy disk or a memory slot in the control panel. We did not want to risk losing a performance. Second, we had to use a computer sequencer to break up these long programs into single song files. Many of the commonly-available professional sequencing programs will alter the subtle order of the MIDI events in an XP file just enough to mess things up. (The XP file format stores extra bits of resolution using normally unused MIDI controllers. These controllers must remain in their exact location in the MIDI file relative to the notes that they effect. Sequencers tend to disturb this subtle order.) Enhanced mode does offer better timing resolution (a clock of 384 vs. 92) as well as 128 pedal increments instead of 16. Also, the Pro will play back any MIDI data with a wider dynamic range.
