Good morning, everyone. In a message dated 6/12/02 8:28:51 AM, Mike writes: << Letting you all nbow that you can go to www.piano-e-competition.com now and download the DKV files of all preliminary round contestants. Follow the directions to save as midi files. >> In total, there will be MIDI files for 23 fabulous pianists up on the web site this week. At the moment, MIDI files for 7 of the contestants have been posted. Hopefully the rest will be posted within a day. The reason for the delay is that each contestant played an hour-long program in the Preliminaries that was recorded, in most cases, as a single MIDI file. It has been a time-consuming process to take each long MIDI file and to chop it up correctly into individual pieces. The files that have been posted are clearly labelled with underlines that indicate an available link. You can right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) on these links and download the files to a floppy disk. Each file name contains the name of the artist for future reference. When you put the disk into your Disklavier, you will see the name of each piece and the name of the artist (to the extent that these items can be displayed in 32 characters). Please note that the web site lists the screening audition programs for each contestant. These programs were not recorded. Also, each contestant's page lists the solo piece that the contestant intends to play IF he/she makes it to the finals. Only six contestants make it to the finals. Their MIDI files should be available this weekend. Regards, PianoBench

Hi George, I understand Disklavier Pro instruments are being used for the competition. Will the posted MIDI files include the full XP data? This could be a nice source of recordings for Disklavier Pro owners. Mark

There was the possibility that, with dense pieces, the XP data for an hour program might overwhelm a memory slot on the Pro or a single floppy disk. Furthermore, computer-editing of Pro data with typical sequencing programs results in a mixup of the positioning of controllers 16 and 81 which hold the extra bits of resolution. So, the data is posted as enhanced data. That data will still play back noticeably better on a Pro. The ehanced Pro data is still superior by virtue of its greater timing resolution of 384 clocks per quarter note (compared to 96 on a regular Disklavier), 128 increments of pedal (instead of 16), and key release velocity. I think that you will be impressed by the results. Keep in mind, however, that these pieces were played live and that the mistakes that would normally be deleted from a commercial release are present. Regards, PianoBench

(Traditional MIDI usage is to send a note-on with velocity zero for key up--these seem to have key up velo.) So it's more than you'd see in a traditional MIDI piano capture. -- Robert

Can any of the competition files be downloaded in the Disklavier Pro format? Steve
2002-06-29 by PianoBench@aol.com
Good evening, everyone. In a message dated 6/16/02 2:55:36 PM, Steven writes: << Can any of the competition files be downloaded in the Disklavier Pro format? >> The Disklavier Pro can record in either XP mode or Enhanced mode. Both modes provide superior recording to what is available on other models of Disklavier. We did not record the competition in XP mode for a variety of reasons. First, during the Preliminary round, it was necessary to record hour-long programs as a single file. Given the density of this very difficult music, it would be easy to exceed the capacity of a floppy disk or a memory slot in the control panel. We did not want to risk losing a performance. Second, we had to use a computer sequencer to break up these long programs into single song files. Many of the commonly-available professional sequencing programs will alter the subtle order of the MIDI events in an XP file just enough to mess things up. (The XP file format stores extra bits of resolution using normally unused MIDI controllers. These controllers must remain in their exact location in the MIDI file relative to the notes that they effect. Sequencers tend to disturb this subtle order.) Enhanced mode does offer better timing resolution (a clock of 384 vs. 92) as well as 128 pedal increments instead of 16. Also, the Pro will play back any MIDI data with a wider dynamic range.
