First of all, you should try to figure out why your QuickTime is broken. 
Upgrading to OSX should not have broken anything.

Second, iTunes is a great midi player that comes free with the OS. It 
can mix mp3's and midi's and allows you to create separate collections 
("albums") from your library for playback.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
