Re: [disklavier] Re: music creator 2002

If a midi song is intended to have full dynamic range--that is, both
very loud parts and soft parts--I generally limit the high velocity
notes to 95 and the low velocity notes to 22. If it is a softer song, I
might bring the high velocity end down lower than 95.

With a DC3 Mark II, and with the DKV volume set to zero, the sound power
in dB has a nice linear slope from velocity 95 down to 22. There is a
knee in the curve at 22. Below 22 all velocities produce roughly the
same sound level (and do not always strike reliably). I think it's a
good idea to have no notes below velocity 22. If I find a file with a
few scattered notes below 22, I set them all to 22, then scale the
remaining notes appropriately. With Veloset, you can shift all notes
upward so that the lowest is 22, but you cannot set all in the range of
1 to 22 to 22. Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, however, is capable of setting a
range of velocities to a specified velocity.

If you want to have conversations, you can scale down well below 95.
Amazingly, you can still recognize PianoSoft music reduced to the range
of 22 to 35. (You'll notice that the DKV volume control no longer has
much effect.) To my ear, scaled-down music loses its sizzle. But then,
if the conversation is more interesting, who cares?
