Re: [disklavier] New file uploaded to disklavier

2002-12-08 by Maureen

Tom,
Thank you for your help! May I ask one more question, please? (Well, 2, counting that one!) Is the .fil extension used mostly for "orchestrations"?
As I said originally, I have downloaded and enjoyed many files from this group's web site. But, (and it is a big one) they have all been solo piano pieces. I never use the symphony feature on my PianoDisc -- I just prefer the acoustic grand piano. So, I am wondering if the synthesized orchestrations on these files have any bearing on the .fil extension.
;
It would certainly help if members would label their uploaded files as either "solo piano" or "piano with orchestration." For my purposes the files I have worked with today are of no use to me -- I would have known that several hours ago had they been labeled as "piano with orchestration."
Thanks again,
Maureen

Maureen,

The .fil format is the Yamaha disklavier's proprietary midi file format. That is why PowerTracks and other sequencers cannot recognize the file. There are utilities in the file flault of this forum that will convert the .fil files to .mid (SMF format) files. In actuality the .fil format is almost identical to .mid format but Yamaha made just enough changes to create their own proprietary file format for the disklavier.

Hey, is it just me? I have never had a problem downloading and unzipping, as
needed, files from this group. (I am a PianoDisc user and I do have to use
Powertacks and Gunter's software for conversions to general midi type 0.)

For some reason, these files are unzipping into a '.fil' format -- what the
heck is that? Powertacks can't open it. And, Gunter's midi conversion
program cannot open it -- although, strangely, when the files unzip, they
"acquire" Gunter's "1-0-2" logo as their icons! Can someone in this group
tell me what is going on with these? Was it something I did?

As always, your help is most appreciated!
Maureen
