As Bob noted, file Evergreen.mid is not a real MIDI file (despite the file extension). I opened it in a hex editor, and saw the term "Apple Music Media Handler" near the bottom. I dropped that term into Google, which got me to QuickTime. Guess what -- it played just fine in the free version of QuickTime 5 I have on Windows XP. My free version has no "SaveAs" function. I suspect that in QuickTime Pro you could open it as is, and save it as a real MIDI file. It'll take an Apple (or QuickTime Pro) user to confirm that conversion works. - John Q. Walker
