This SMF file won,t play

This SMF file won,t play

2003-01-06 by Jimmy

Carol,

I have donwloaded this Vivaldi file from the net and it initially didn't
want to play on the disklavier.
I had to alter the version and reload it with GNmidi, now it works fine.
however, I am curious to know as why this version attached it not playable
on the disklavier, as a matter of fact it does'nt appeared on the window of
the mark III. I have tried different things and now I am able to get to
play.
If you have the chance to look at it and tell me why I am always willing to
learn something new. I know it is probably something very easy. But i am
puzzled by it.

Thanks.
Much appreciated.

Jimmy,
The file has a RIFF header in front of the MIDI header. If you
delete the first 20 bytes in a hex editor (so that the file now
begins with MThd), and save it, it plays perfectly.

That's a programmer's technical answer to the question. What's the
best answer using common everyday tools you'd find around your
computer or piano?

much appreciated.
I knew there had to be a simple answer, since after cleaning it up ith GN midi it did play, but my curiosity got the best of me.
Not that I' would be able to fix it with the hex editor but it satisfy me.
Thanks again.

Can anyone tell me if this file (which plays fine on my Mac) cannot be
played on the Disklavier?

Thanks

The first bytes of a valid MIDI file are always 4D 54 68 64 (the ASCII
equivalent of "MThd"). Your file is something other than an SMF. Its
first four bytes are 00 00 00 08.

What little I could read of the Evergreen midi in Quick View Plus said it
was an Apple Music Media file. Not even gnmidi could read it.

Somehow, my reply to Jimmy concerning his Vivaldi midi file got lost
somewhere in cyberspace. My reply to him was what a marvelous program the
gnmidi is; how much it has changed the past year, and that the first aid
icon function is worth the price alone.

A data file like the Vivaldi just reinforces that data is not perfect, and
can get corrupted - even on the PianoSoft disks.

To those who could read the files, and find their flaws, how did you do
that?

For looking at the raw contents of any file, UltraEdit-32 is a great
HEX/text editor program. It's also a handy tool if you do any
programming, as it knows the syntax of many programming languages and
can "color code" keywords and parameters for you, while the file itself
stays plain text. It can batch search/replace/compare text strings in
multiple files. It can also directly edit files on a remote FTP server
(provided you have access rights of course). This is not that much
music related, but truly a powerful tool to be recommended to those
interested.

As Bob noted, file Evergreen.mid is not a real MIDI file (despite the
file extension).

I opened it in a hex editor, and saw the term "Apple Music Media
Handler" near the bottom. I dropped that term into Google, which got
me to QuickTime. Guess what -- it played just fine in the free
version of QuickTime 5 I have on Windows XP.

My free version has no "SaveAs" function. I suspect that in
QuickTime Pro you could open it as is, and save it as a real MIDI
file. It'll take an Apple (or QuickTime Pro) user to confirm that
conversion works.

Hi all - the "save as" in QuickTime 5 Pro Player didn't fix the file
when I tested it, but "export" as standard MIDI file worked. Now the
file is playable in Windows Media Player, and I think will play in
Disklavier as well. Fixed file is attached.

Re: [disklavier] Re: This SMF file won,t play

2003-01-09 by Robert Welcyng

Thanks to Chine-Chine for getting it into SMF 0 format. Evergreen2
would not play from a 720K DOS diskette on my Mark II, the reason being
that the note-ons (and on/off sustain pedal) were directed to channel 3.
(It may possibly play on Mark III's.)

By changing the channel from 3 to 1, it does play on a Mark II.

This has been fun!

When I open this file in WMP and with the sound all
the way up I can barely hear the music. Same thing
happens when I run with Real Player. What gives? (I
am such a novice with kind of thing!)

Yes, this is both fun and informative. Thank you! Since there are lots of
midi files out there on the internet using the Quick Time Player, does this
mean they will ALL do this?

2003-01-10 by Chine-Chine Wang

Ah... I did take a look at Everygreen2.mid in Cakewalk to make sure it
was a real MIDI file, but forgot about the channel issue. In fact, I
had configured my Disklavier (a Mark II XG) to play any and all channels
with a piano group instrument on the Disklavier itself, so I don't have
to verify (and possibly modify) the channels on all the MIDI files I
download from the net.

This works out very well (for example, "Everygreen2" played happily on
my Disklavier with the piano data on channel 3) but the drawback is that
I may be listening to some "non-piano" piano group instruments such as
harpsichord played on the piano.
