Disklavier functionality

2003-05-05 by bdpotts

In posting my reply above, it made me think about the functionality
of my piano that I had questions about.

I have a C2 grand with the disklavier and silent system. It has
always seemed strange the way the silent system functions, here's
what happens.

I turn on the disklavier and press the button on the silent system.
There is a brief humm while the silent bar moves into position.

Now here is the strange part.

If I just start playing the piano, the sythesized piano sounds come
out of the speaker under the piano. Every time I want to use the
silent system I have to climb under the piano and shut off the
speaker (otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose of the "silent"
system).

Could this actually be the way Yamaha designed this system?

I've lived with this for about 3 1/2 years now and every time I climb
under the piano I try to think of a new way to torture the Yamaha
technician that couldn't get the speaker to shut off when the silent
system is on (arrggh).

Is there something I am missing? Does everyone's silent disklavier
function this way?

just wondering.
