As to your question about whether the DSR-1 is better sounding than 
the XG unit , I would say that there should be no difference in the 
quality of the instrument sounds (referred to as `voices').  As 
information, the XG unit you are referring to is equivalent to 
sounds produces by a Yamaha MU50 tone generator. 

The DSR-1 has an internal tone generator that uses the 
same `wavetable' as the Yamaha MU50.  That is, both devices have 
identical high quality voice samples as both use the same method of 
tone generation known as `Advanced Wave Memory 2' (AWM2) and both 
devices are 32-note polyphonic and 16-part multi-timbral.

Appreciate that while the MU50 is a dedicated (standalone) hardware 
tone generator, the DSR-1 is a device specifically designed for use 
with a Disklavier (provides disk drive, playback of PianoSoft disks 
and Standard MIDI Files, Disklavier recording capability, etc.).
