The DGA1XG is what you have. It is a play-only MarkII XG Disklavier. It it NOT a DGA1 which is a MarkIII unit. It can only be upgraded with a DSR1. No way will a MarkIII control unit with a built-in CD player ever work on this unit. You got an acoustic piano with digital playback capabilities. Carol Beigel

To Carol and Piano Bench, It seems that the dealer did a switch on me and did not give me the grand I picked out in his showroom and then add the DKV to it. He told me it would take a few weeks to install all the DKV parts, but was probably checking all his stores for the MarkII XG. I guess I am happy with what I have and will investigate the purchase of a DSR1. Do you have any idea of the cost of this unit? Can I order it from Yamaha, or do I have to go through a dealer? Thanks for helping out an uneducated user. If I had known about DUG before I purchased the piano, I could have dealt more intelligently with the dealer, although he gave me a good price and took our KAWAI digital piano in on trade.

Jim, I'm glad that you're happy with your piano, despite the dealer's shenanigans. I don't know if anyone else knows if there is some way to make a complaint about this kind of behaviour to Yamaha (telling a client they are installing the DKV at the shop is such a blatant mis-statement....) or not. Chances are if they are misleading to one client, they are misleading more people.... knowing how much of an investment buying a DKV is to most families, it's irritating to see people mislead. A DSR-1 retails for $1295 from a Yamaha dealer. For anyone ever buying a "specific" piano, ALWAYS write down the serial number of the unit you think you are getting!!!! Having been in this business for over 25 years I am familiar with the scenario whereby what the customer hears is not what the salespeople intended. Salespeople can also be misinformed - especially when trying to piece together a "great deal" that just does not exist. Perhaps this dealership sold not only Disklavier, but PianoDisc or QRS as well. A newbie salesperson might not be aware that a Disklavier is ONLY factory installed. I am happy that you are pleased with your purchase. I doubt you got ripped off. You have a new instrument with a terrific warranty. You got a price you were happy with. Perhaps they can also make you a good deal on the DSR-1! Carol Beigel ----- Original Message -----

Thanks, Carol. Yamaha's SRP for the DSR-1 is $1395. The local dealer claimed it was $1495 and would sell the unit to me for $1295. This would give my piano the ability to play "Smart Piano Soft" along with some commercial CD's. Have you heard any of these? Would the DSR-1 give better sounds for the "synthesized" MIDI instruments? Those coming from the XG unit are not always the best. I'm trying to justify spending the extra money for the DSR-1. I would appreciate any input. I don't think the dealer intentionally tried to mislead me, but he didn't tell me about other pianos in the DKV line, just the digital piano, and I went into the buying experience with 'eyes wide shut'.

As to your question about whether the DSR-1 is better sounding than the XG unit , I would say that there should be no difference in the quality of the instrument sounds (referred to as `voices'). As information, the XG unit you are referring to is equivalent to sounds produces by a Yamaha MU50 tone generator. The DSR-1 has an internal tone generator that uses the same `wavetable' as the Yamaha MU50. That is, both devices have identical high quality voice samples as both use the same method of tone generation known as `Advanced Wave Memory 2' (AWM2) and both devices are 32-note polyphonic and 16-part multi-timbral. Appreciate that while the MU50 is a dedicated (standalone) hardware tone generator, the DSR-1 is a device specifically designed for use with a Disklavier (provides disk drive, playback of PianoSoft disks and Standard MIDI Files, Disklavier recording capability, etc.). --- In disklavier@yahoogroups.com, "Jim Schelling" <jimschelling@a...> wrote: > Thanks, Carol. I'm seriously considering adding a DSR-1 to my MarkIIXG. Will this add benefits other than the ability to play PianoSmart disks? Have you heard any of the PianoSmart disk/CD combos? I would appreciate feedback from yourself and PianoBench. My technical knowledge is mostly in computers and I am pretty dumb about the DKV systems ( as you can probably tell).
